『켈리 갱단의 실화』와 기억의 정치학

국문 초록 (Abstract)

네드 켈리는 오늘날 호주인들에게 특별한 의미를 갖는 "부시레인저"(bushranger)이다. 이 "말도둑" 부시레인저가 호주에서 특별한 의미를 띠는 이유는 그가 "오지"에서 국가를 건설하는 힘겨운 싸움을 해 온 호주인들에게 그들의 개척 정신, 감당하기 어려운 역경에도 굴하지 않는 "투쟁가"(battler)의 정신을 환기시키기 때문이다. 피터 캐리의 『켈리 갱단의 실화』는 식민 시대의 호주에서 공정함을 위해 싸웠던 아일랜드 반항아들을 영웅화하고 그들에게 목소리를 부여하는 민족적 서사 중의 하나로 손꼽힌다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 이 소설을 "공화주의 논쟁"이라는 역사적 맥락에 위치시켜 읽을 때 단순히 민족적 아이콘에 찬사를 바치는 수준을 넘어서는 의미가 이 소설에 있다고 주장한다. 본 연구가 주목하는 역사적 사실은, 캐리의 텍스트가 모습을 드러낸 2000년이라는 시점이 호주가 영연방을 탈퇴할 것인가의 문제를 두고 국민투표를 실시한 그 다음 해라는 점이다. 당시 왕정을 지지하였던 여당의 교묘한 술수로 인해 투표 결과는 예상을 뒤엎은 공화주의의 패배였다. 대다수의 호주인들이 투표 결과에 분노하였던 시점에, 영국법에 반대한 반항아의 일대기를 재서사화하는 행위는 패배한 공화주의에 힘을 실어주는 결과를 낳았을 것이었다. 그러나 공화주의자들이 분한을 삼키던 시점에 출간된 캐리의 소설은 놀랍게도 정파를 초월하여 호주민 모두의 사랑을 받았다. 네드 켈리의 기억을 재서사화하는 작업이 어떠한 식으로 이루어졌는지를 분석함으로써 본 연구는 캐리의 소설이 당대의 정국에서 어떻게 이 '기이한' 정치적 효과를 갖게 되었는지를 밝히고자 한다.
본 연구는 이러한 주제를 다룸에 있어 켈리가 생전에 남긴 두 통의 서한, "캐머론 편지"와 "제릴데리 편지"를 일종의 역사적 사료로서 사용한다. 캐리의 소설과 네드 켈리의 서한을 비교함으로써 본 연구는, 캐리의 소설이 말하기를 원하지 않는 몇 가지를 지적하고자 한다. "제릴데리 편지"의 원전에는 있으되 캐리의 소설이 누락시키고 있는 것 중에는 ‘민족적 지시어’가 있다. 여기서 말하는 민족의 범주에는 영국과 아일랜드가 모두 포함된다. 이처럼 ‘특정한’ 민족에 관한 지시관계를 후경화시키거나 아예 누락시킴으로써 캐리의 텍스트가 성취하는 바는 네드 켈리를 "호주인"이라는 보편적 범주로 전환시키는 것이라고 본 연구는 주장한다. 캐리의 소설에서 "호주의 영웅"이 되기 위해서 네드 켈리가 숨죽여야 했던 목소리는 해외 아일랜드 민족주의자들의 무장(武裝)의 가능성을 언급하는 불온한 목소리이다. 즉, 캐리의 소설에서 호주 민족주의가 아일랜드계 소수민의 전투적 대결주의나 아일랜드 민족주의를 ‘덮어쓰기’ 하였던 것이다. 본 연구의 결론은 켈리의 삶이 고도로 개인화된 가정적 텍스트 내에 가두어짐으로써 21세기에 일종의 저항 기억으로 다시 부상할 가능성이 봉쇄되었다는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Ned Kelly, the bushranger, is a legendary figure of special significance to the Australians of today. The Aussies' affection for this "horse thief" derives from the fact that the latter has become a national ideal of the "battler" who did not give up in the face of hardships during the colonial era. Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang is considered to be one of the "national narratives" that not only heroize but also give voice to the Irish rebels who fought for "fair go" in the colonial Australia. However, this paper asserts that there are more to the novel than merely paying a tribute to the national icon, especially when the novel is examined in the context of the "republic controversy." In 1999, the preceding year of the novel's publication, Australia had a national referendum on the issue of whether or not to secede from the Commonwealth. Due to the procedural manipulation of the royalist ruling party, republicanism was voted down. At the time when the majority of Australians were irate with the result of the referendum, Carey's retelling of the supposedly anti-British rebel failed to promote the lost cause. This paper investigates how the narrativization of the legendary figure, whose anti-British and anti-authoritarian attitude could be easily translated into the cause of republicanism, came to appeal to the general reading public.
In so doing, this paper compares Carey's novel with the historical Kelly's two epistles: Jerilderie and Cameron Letter. This comparison brings to light what are left out in the process of Carey's narrativization of the rebel's life. One of those excluded from Carey's text is "nationalist signifiers." By either backgrounding or leaving out specific ethnic relations such as British vs. Irish, Carey's text was able to transform Ned Kelly, the anti-British rebel, into a new national icon of Australian. What Kelly had to silence in order to become an Australian hero in Carey's novel was the subversive voice that spoke in the historical epistles of the possibility of armament by the Irish nationalists abroad. That is, Australian nationalism in Carey's novel overwrote the militant nationalism of the Irish minority in the colonial Australia. The conclusion of this paper is that the possibility for Kelly's life to surface again in the 21st century as a sort of counter-memory is contained by Carey through its inclusion in a highly personalized domestic narrative.
