유럽신화문학과 통합유럽 정체성의 문화적 형성 = Literature of European Myth and Cultural Formations of European Identity

This paper focuses on the cultural formation of European Identity in the context of European Integration.
We know that The Maastricht Treaty established "European citizenship" and "encouragement of European cultural creativity" in order to strengthen European consciousness. But the concepts such as European Citizenship and European Culture outlined in the Treaty are controversial especially in relation to actual transformation of European identity affected by immigration. So we think that it is necessary to research a more fundamental perspective regarding the conception of identity to give the European Union a higher degree of socio-cultural cohesion.
That's why we are interested in the ancient histories presented by European literature of myth, where we can observe archetypal formation and transformation of diverse identities.
Reflecting some of the issues raised by actuality such as European Enlargement, Integration, and Citizenship, we move to an exploration of individual and group identities such as Odysseus, Europe, Anna Perenna and Terentius who became roman citizen author from foreign slave in the past. So we know that, in the world symbolized by god's histories, the ethnic or geographical identity was neither normal nor natural unlike today.
Latin culture is not simple replica of Greek culture. It is an identity of fusion that could make compatible contradictory cultures, for instance, hellenism and hebraism. Also, through observation of epic poems in the middle age such as "Song of the Nibelungens", "Edda", "Song of Roland", we find specific moral values that could integrate hellenism and hebraism to their own culture without conflict and contradiction. But that's not all. This amazing imagination of middle age identity presented in Northern European Myth teaches us a way of integration that can accept even Asian identity such as the case of Attila.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 유럽통합의 지향성과 관련하여 정치, 제도적인 ‘형식적’ 정체성을 지지할 수 있는 ‘실질적’ 정체성의 형성에 대한 관심에서 착수되었다. 마스트리히트 조약에서 그것은 구성원들에게 주체 의식을 확신시키기 위한 ‘유럽시민권’ 조항과 통합에 대한 정서적 연대성을 마련하기 위한 “문화활동의 장려” 조항으로 명시되었다. 그러나 거기에는 이민을 통한 오늘날 유럽인 정체성의 근본적 변모에 대한 구체적 인식이 부족하여 보였다. 따라서 현실에 기반한 사회통합의 윤리를 실천하는 유럽의 건설을 위해서는 다른 전통과 문화를 가진 사람들과의 공존에 대한 연구가 뒷받침되어야 할 것이다. 이에 우리는 보다 포괄적인 정신적, 문화적 정체성의 확립에 대한 전망을 확보하기 위해 유럽형성 초기의 신화문학을 중심으로 원천적인 유럽인 의식 형성을 관찰하고자 하였다.
우리는 “일리아드”, “에우로페” “안나 페렌나” 등의 상징과 테렌티우스와 같이 이방의 노예였다가 로마인이 된 유럽인의 사례를 통해 지리적 정체성과 인종적 정체성의 덧없음을 확인하였다. 로마신화는 희랍신화를 이름만 바꾸었지만 그것은 ‘같은 것의 다르게 세우기’로서 헬레니즘과 헤브라이즘을 결합하면서 유럽의 정신적 정체성이 모순된 것을 양립시킬 줄 아는 문화가 되어가고 있음을 관찰하였다.
우리는 게르만의 중세신화들이, 그리스신화에서 태동한 헬레니즘과 라틴문화가 수용한 헤브라이즘을 융합하면서, 거기에 “라그나뢰크”의 이미지로 상징되는 그들 고유의 어둡고도 환상적인 다신주의를 뒤섞은 독특한 ‘3차원적’ 정체성을 형성하고 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 반드시 기억해야 할 중세 신화의 네 번째 가치가 있다. 훈족인 아틸라의 호의와 롤랑이 유럽의 땅으로서 기억하는 콘스탄티노플의 암시가 보여주는 대로, ‘아시아적 정체성의 수용에 대한 열린 정신’이다. 우리는 이를 “원융회통(圓融回通)”의 정체성이라고 불러 본 바 있다. 단일국가 문화에서 초국가적 정치통합체에 대한 지향성이 대세가 되고 있는 오늘날, 그것을 지지할 수 있는 문화적 기반으로서 우리는 이 옛날 유럽과 유럽인이 가졌던 놀라운 관용의 상상력에 대해 곰곰이 생각해 볼 필요가 있을 것이다.
