버나드 브로디의 해양전략 사상의 재조명 = Bernard Brodie : Rethinking of His Maritime Strategic Thought

The purpose of this study is to analyze maritime thought of Bernard Brodie through his writings. In order to answer the purpose of this study, I would like to analyze the following questions.
First, What is his background for maritime strategic thoughts? Is there any influence to his thinking from his life and his generation. Second, What is modern meaning of command of the sea? Third, What is the political purpose of maritime power of those times.
In his Writings, I got a few findings as follows :
Frist, Brodie's military background and WWⅡ experience made him raise a concern of defence matters. Maritime power was very important factor in the past as well as today. Basic concept of his maritime thought is sea lines of communications(SLOC) which is also key factor for national competition in connection with denying her enemy's SLOC and securing the our SLOC. Second, Concept of command of the sea will be changed with the development of science and technologies, and shifting of maritime environment. Command of the sea concept is changed to control of the sea. Third, Conduct of way of war is concern, decisive fleet battle is great importances not only but also destruction of fleet marine and SLOCs. Fourth, Purpose of war is to submit enemy will to us. Maritime power is also to deny enemy's use of seas by SLOC. In other words, we tried to use of maximum use of seas, to pressure by amphibious bombardment and power projection to enemy's territory.
The lessons we can learn from history of world politics as well as findings of Bernard Brodie's maritime thought are clear and simple: Sea power is more useful than land power in marking countries stronger and wealthier. Sea power had been the crucial factor in forming the skillful in developing maritime capability had been the winners in world history in terms of political and economic aspects.
