디자인서울에 대한 조선일보와 한겨레신문의 담론 분석

The purpose of this research is to analyze the diverse discourses on “Design Seoul” which was initiated in 2006, and to survey and analyze the responses of citizens and designers to the discourse reflected in newspapers. The research questions were “How is the major discourse on ‘Design Seoul’ composed in the newspapers?” and “What influences has the discourse had on citizens and designers?”. Different research methods were adopted to answer each research question. For the first research question, newspaper articles published between July of 2006 and July of 2011 and that have “Design Seoul” as keywords were selected and a content analysis of the articles in those newspaper was done by three coders. For the second research question, typical examples of the discourse in each newspaper were given to 261 Seoul citizens and 102 designers, and their responses to each discourse were assessed using a survey. The result of the ensuing survey analysis revealed four major discussion points: The first discussion point is that partisanship of the newspapers has distorted “Design Seoul” into a political issue. Second, newspapers’ political interests rendered the design discourse as dichotomous subjects. Third, more diversified discourses on design among designers and a greater amount of data are required. Last but not least, the role of the design community in society should be enlarged in scope to function as a practical advocate of public design and to produce authoritative design data.
