메이로쿠샤(明六社) 지식인들 논의에 나타난 다양성과 공존의 문제 = The Importance of Diversity and Coexistence among the Members of Meirokusha

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The primary focus of this paper is Sakatani Shiroshi, an underappreciated member of the Meirokusha. Sakatani, a Confucian scholar from Okayama prefecture, joined Meirokusha in 1874, and was one of the most enthusiastic contributors to the society. His writings deal with various themes, but this paper examines his emphasis on the importance of preserving variety within a society. After initially considering the Sakatani`s article Revering the Differences (Meirokuzasshi, Vol. 19), which takes this issue as its main subject, several other articles which share a similar theme are also analysed, the authors being Nishi Amane, Nakamura Masanao and Nishimura Shigeki. The subjects of these articles vary in detail, but they all discuss the problem of coexisting with others who have a different worldview, so it seems reasonable to categorize them as a group. There is also another factor that binds them together, in that they all adhere to the basic principles of Confucianism, and this paper investigates the role played by Confucianism in their approach to the aforementioned issue.
