Our study aims to consider various aspects of translation and reception of French romantic poetry in Korea in the 1920s and 1930s, especially those in the translation of Alfred de Musset and his translator Sohn Woosung. Today, studies of translated literature are realized at different angles depending on the growing awareness of the importance of literature translated into the construction and development of Korean literature. Despite the growth of interest and research in this area, there is still the need to clarify and complete the bibliographic data of published documents especially before 1945.
It is in this light that we have tried to conduct a critical review of previous studies, in order to open a holistic perspective on the translation and reception of Romantic poets in early modern Korea. Regarding Musset, we completed the list of translations and confirmed the original texts. At the same time, we also reflected on the translator who was the subject of translation but had attracted little attention from researchers, here in this case, Sohn Woosung.
Some weaknesses of our study lies in the fact that we have not been able to clearly define the contexts of these translations and perform analayses on translating Sohn Woosung from different perspectives, will be the treat to our future research. Conduct the examination of particular translations Hugo, Vigny, Lamartine and also their translators will help us to complete an incomplete page in the history of translated literature on translation and reception of French Romantic poets and their translators.
