This study carried out a research on with which contents the depression, which pregnant women can experience during the pregnant period, is responded in Draw-a-Story test according to pregnant women's depression tendency.
As pregnancy leads to many of physical, emotional and biological changes, it allows mother-to-be to experience psychological depression. This depression may disappear as the pregnant period is terminated. However, there is also a case of coming to experience postpartum depression again. Especially, depression has high possibility of being developed into mental disorder, thereby hindering formation of affection with an unborn child and leading to many difficulties in child-rearing even after childbirth. Also, after then, it leads to facing a crisis that the emotional system in the whole family is shaken, and to being probably needed an effort to solve this with lots of time and costs. Accordingly, it is thought to be needed the positively emotional support for pregnant women. This study was began for the purpose of carrying out Draw-a-Story test targeting pregnant women and to obtain the response data to depression.
This study examined with which contents it is responded in DAS(Draw-a-Stroy test) according to pregnant women's depression tendency during the pregnant period, and researched into relationship with BDI-Ⅱ(Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ), which is objective depression test.
The data collection in this study was carried out at the mother-and-child health center within health center where is located in B district of Incheon Metropolitan city per twice a week over August-September in 2009. It targeted pregnant women who agree to questionnaire, and presented baby commodities in return.
The research subjects were 67 pregnant women from 20 including 19 years old to 41 years old who dwell in Incheon Metropolitan city. It carried out the socio-demographic questionnaire of including obstetrical variables, and BDI-Ⅱ(Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ) and DAS(Draw-a-Story test). Out of the execution in operation, 2 people, who rejected drawing a picture, were excluded from the result value. The findings are as follows.
First, in subjects' obstetrical variables, the depression was reported more in the more worry about childbirth, in the more perception of thinking oneself to be depressive, in the more existence of conflict with husband's family or maiden home.
Second, the emotional contents of DAS(Draw-a-Story test) showed significant difference between normal group and group with serious depression. It was indicated that the more serious depression leads to the lower score in emotional contents. However, number of cases with serious depression was less. Thus, to examine homogeneity between groups in each, the rank test was carried out. Significant value was obtained with the appropriate significant probability in p<.05. Even in difference by DAS(Draw-a-Story test) theme classification, it was indicated to be depressive more in the more corresponding to negative theme(1, 2 points). As for this, BDI-Ⅱ(Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ) was divided into two groups in normality and depression(light depression, mid-level depression, and serious depression were included in group with depression). In the emotional contents of DAS(Draw-a-Story test), the depression was reconfirmed with discriminant analysis as for the appearance of significant difference between groups. As a result, the probability that can discriminate depression with depression was indicated to be 90%. The whole discriminant probability was 65.7%, thereby having been able to be known that there is high correlation between groups in the relationship between group with depression and BDI(Beck Depression Inventory) for the emotional contents of DAS(Draw-a-Story test). Generally, it can be said to have correlation given being over 40%. However, even the error probability, which can be discriminated it to be depressive with an error in the normal group, was indicated to be 44.7%. Thus, a sense of depression can be often experienced during the pregnant period, but needs to be discriminated by being differentiated from real depression.
Also, according to DAS(Draw-a-Story test) self-report, the depression was indicated to be higher in the more negative report such as 'being sad' and 'desiring to avoid.'
Third, it examined pregnant women's emotional contents in DAS(Draw-a-Story test). As a result, in the positive scores of corresponding to 4 points and 5 points for the emotional-content point, it was composed of a picture of which pregnant women are proposed a marriage or recalling the time of marriage, and of the contents of future family image. This is thought that a sense of happiness on pregnancy was reflected in picture. And, in the negative scores of corresponding to 1 point and 2 points, it was composed of vagueness or sadness on difficult situation, yearning and isolation in pregnant women. This is needed the detailed interview on whether an individual's internal depression was sustained for long and originated from several situation caused by pregnancy. In the contents of corresponding to 1 point out of the scores of subjects' emotional contents in DAS(Draw-a-Story test), the aggressive contents such as suicide and death were not reported. However, the yearning for character that isn't exist was expressed. Impotent contents of failing to cope with critical situation could be observed. In the picture of corresponding to 3 points that number of response in subjects was the largest, it was responded with ambivalent, vague, and unemotional contents, thereby having been consistent with the preceding researches.
In the results of research targeting pregnant women in this way, the result was obtained that DAS(Draw-a-Story test) reflects depression. Given being used along with objective test when selecting depression in the real clinical scent, the interviewees' emotional information will be offered more.
