Church growth is God's will. Jesus said that he came to give his life as a ransom for many. The history of church growth started upon his death on the cross and resurrection, and his disciples produced numerous fruits till today.
This is how the Church of Jesus Christ came to grow. Just as the Jerusalem Church showed numeric growth, church growth in accordance with God's will is a matter of course fact. Furthermore, the duty and the capacity of any believer is to evangelize. Children cannot be an exception either in this case.
Church growth and children's evangelistic activities are inseparable because children will play the main role in the church future and they are the very workers who can save souls with the most disinterested fervor. Therefore, churches must pay a continuous attention to the fostering and training of child evangelists. When this is overlooked, the growth of Korean churches may be delayed. Accordingly, the importance of child evangelism has been published by researchers and emphasized on pastoral fields, and diverse evangelistic methods have been introduced so far.
Generally, the term 'children' refers to those who are age 13 or below. According to Korean government statistics, in 1995 among the total number of 8,760,336 Christians, 2,125,998 or 32% were children from age 0 to 14. In 2005, out of the total number of 8,616,438 Korean Christians, only 1843,748 or 27% were children from age 0 to 14. In ten years, there has been a decrease of 5%.
Then, what is causing the continuous decrease of children's attendance in Sunday school? Roughly speaking, the secularization of Christian families due to the development of civilization, and the ensuing unfit environment for children; in addition, their lack of leisure time due to parental excessive academic ambition and the insufficient committment of Sunday school teachers, etc. In order to overcome those barriers, a strategic approach at denomination, theological and church level is deemed necessary.
Child evangelism is done through contacts or meetings. A believing child can approach unbelieving children the easiest way. It is much more effective for children to evangelize other children than adults, in which case believing ones must be trained to preach the gospel. In other words, a systematic and concrete education and training on how to approach and what gospel contents to preach must be devised in details. One of these strategies include child evangelistic squads.
The goals of child evangelistic squads are the winning of souls, the spreading of the gospel and the construction of God's kingdom, for which a strategy is a must. It is crucial to first understand children even before constituting any evangelistic squad. The theoretical basis of child evangelism in the Bible is enlightened through the fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, it is demonstrated by Jesus who loved children and drew close to them.
On the basis of the theories regarding child evangelism, there are application plans for child evangelistic squads. These must have a systematized constitution at church level, namely a minister in charge, some teachers and child evangelists. Posters to recruit them can be put up for this effect. The assessment of family situation, area characteristics, living standards of those who are to be evangelized is required for an efficient performance of child evangelism. Education on the gospel presentation to child evangelists will cause them to evangelize by means of scriptures.
The Lord of evangelism is the Holy Spirit and this principle applies also in child evangelism. Hence the necessity of having a prayer method and knowing the importance of prayer. Seeds contain life. If a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces many seeds. Sacrifice and dedication are utterly required in the effective application of child evangelistic squads.
