The purpose of present study is to review recent research results relating to hearing-impairment and auditory perception in the hearing-impaired children.

Loudness is the perceptual correlate of sound intensity and is perceived property of sounds which permits us to order them on a scale extending from very quiet to very loud. It has been shown that perceptual processes other than detection thresholds are disordered in the hearing impaired children. Studies relating measures of pure-tone hearing loss to these measures of speech-hearing loss have been in good agreement, showing SRT well predicted by degree of pure-tone loss and DS less well predicted.
As the frequency selectivity of the auditory system is predominantly determined by cochlear filtering, it might be expected that people with sensorineural hearing impairment would exhibit psychological sings of deterioration in frequency selectivity. The ability of the ear to resolve the frequency bands of a complex signal which are temporally coincident is more important than discrimination.
In general, patients with sensorineural hearing losses exhibit poorer performance, but the gross nature of the data is unlikely yet to take us far along the path of accounting for the speech perceptual skill of hearing-impaired individuals except in the most general terms.
In cochlear hearing loss, detection thresholds are elevated but LDL may remain at normal or near normal level. This results in a much reduced dynamic range across the frequencies where the sensitivity thresholds are elevated.
Little is known about the neurological basis or the location of the central processes, and they could involve any structures in the brainstem and above, upwards of the locus of convergence of information from the two ears. Peripheral and central auditory processes seem to be potentially susceptible to dysfunction independently. And there is no reason to deny the possibility of children who exhibit peripheral dysfunction also exhibiting central auditory dysfunction, too.
Pure-tone sensitivity predicts What might be called 'sensitivity loss' for speech quite well, but it does not account for more than about an quarter of the variability of speech-discrimination scores. Although the peripheral processes have been as determiners of speech intelligibility, the relationships remain to be demonstrated unequivocally.
