Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the association between the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome and the major beverage patterns in Korean adults.
Methods: This study used data from the 2016-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were 17,711 adults aged 19 to 64 years old. Beverages were regrouped into seventeen groups based on food codes and beverage intake (g/day) was assessed by 24-hour recall. Factor analysis was used to obtain beverage patterns. The odds ratio (OR) for prevalence of metabolic syndrome and components of metabolic syndrome was assessed using logistic regression analysis.
Results: Three beverage patterns were identified by factor analysis: 1) alcoholic beverages 2) sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) 3) fruit juice and low-sugar beverages. Alcoholic beverages and SSB patterns were associated with an increased levels of metabolic syndrome components. However, fruit juice and low-sugar beverages pattern was not associated with metabolic syndrome and any of metabolic syndrome components such as Abdominal obesity, High fasting glucose, Hypertriglyceridemia, Elevated blood pressure in Korean adults, except hypo- high-density-lipoprotein cholesterolemia.
Conclusions: Alcoholic beverages and sugar-sweetened beverages patterns are associated with increased levels of metabolic syndrome components while fruit juice and a low-sugar beverages pattern is not associated with any of metabolic syndrome components in Korean adults
