The notion of experience takes a very important position in andragogy especially because most adult learning theories start their discussions from the basic assumption that learning merges from experience. However, it has not yet been fully investigated how major learning theories in andragogy understand and deal with experience. This study reviews discussions on theories of experiential learning and investigates four major perspectives on experience in andragogy - progressivism, human psychological perspective, constructivism, and critical theory of learning. As a result, this study finds different positions on experiences in three dimensions - the relationship between the learner and experience, the boundary of experience as the learning resource, and the purpose of experiential learning. Based on these findings, this study suggests how learning can be conceptualized with experience in each perspective and what the implications to adult education are.
