Craftsman in Cosmetology Based on the Analysis of
Fashion Cut in the National Skills Competition

This study aims to analyze the Fashion Cut tasks presented in the National
and Local Skills Competitions over the past five years (2020–2024) and to develop
eight applied haircut tasks that can be adapted for the Master Craftsman in
Cosmetology practical examination. The Fashion Cut tasks of the Skills Competition
embody both the latest design trends and strong formative structures in terms of
form, texture, color, and style flow, demonstrating high applicability as reference
materials for the Master Craftsman exam. Accordingly, this study analyzed the
morphological and technical characteristics of these competition tasks to establish a
systematic framework for developing applied haircut assignments.
The research employed both literature review and visual analysis methods. First,
the concepts and characteristics of the Skills Competition, the Master Craftsman
certification, and haircut techniques were examined to establish a theoretical
foundation. Second, ten Fashion Cut tasks from 2020 to 2024 were analyzed
according to four design criteria: Structure, Texture, Color, and Style Flow. In the
structure analysis, combinations of the four basic forms—Solid, Graduation, Increase
Layer, and Uniform Layer—were examined with respect to head direction (front,
back, left, right), length variation, weight-line flow, and presence or absence of
disconnection. Texture was categorized into Activated and Unactivated types to
identify technical expression methods, while color and style flow were analyzed in
terms of lightness, saturation, and curl direction as presented in design diagrams.
Based on these analyses, eight applied haircut tasks were designed and
produced: Short Axis Cut, Medium Diagonal Cut, Medium Soft Bob Cut, Medium
Equal Balance Cut, Short Projection Cut, Long Impression Cut, Long Grace Layer
Cut, and Short Sleek Disconnection Cut. Each task was classified according to
length (Short, Medium, Long) and structural type (combined form) while considering
exam difficulty and salon applicability.
The results revealed that the Fashion Cut tasks of the Skills Competition
predominantly feature mixed structural forms, asymmetric volume distribution, and
trend-oriented designs utilizing disconnection. The eight developed applied haircut
tasks can serve as effective training materials for practical examination
preparation, particularly for structural analysis exercises and diagram-based
learning. They are expected to enhance examinees’ understanding of haircut
structures and improve their technical performance.
As the first systematic comparative and applied study linking the Skills
Competition and the Master Craftsman examination, this research provides valuable
educational resources for beauty training institutions and practical salons. It also
contributes foundational data to strengthen trend adaptability and design proposal
capabilities in the beauty industry. Future research should expand the comparative
scope to include international skills competitions and global beauty contests,
thereby broadening the creative potential of applied haircut design.
