There is a lot of discussion about the sea because Korea has the geographical environment composed of the sea on three sides. However, there have been few studies that have comprehensively analyzed the sea to examine the change in perception of the sea or the symbolism of the sea. Therefore, in this study, by selecting and analyzing the contents of the sea found in various literatures, I tried to examine the literati’s perception of the sea and the philosophical and aesthetic perspective.
As one of the natural objects, the sea has the characteristics of 'big, wide, and deep'. Thus, it was easy to get confined to the term “there is no end” for the perception of the sea. The sea was an unknown space that could not be crossed over, and it became a space where humans could imagine infinite. Thus, the sea became an ideal space or a refuge for reality for humans. As humans experienced the sea, they became afraid of the ever-changing and unpredictable appearance of the sea. However, as they began to view the sea from a new perspective, their perception of the sea changed. It became an object of contemplation that enabled them to reflect on themselves and to realize the Principle for all things in nature while viewing the sea with their mind, not their eyes. Just as the old literati sought the Principle for nature through the sea, today we too will be able to manage our lives more wisely if we seek the Principle for all things from the perspective of viewing things with the Way[以道觀物].
