이야기 그림책의 시각적 서사 연출에 대한 사례 연구 = Case Studies of Planning Visual Narratives in Picture Books

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그림책 작가들은 그림책의 물리적인 특성을 다양한 방법으로 효과적으로 사용하고 있다. 이러한 물리적 특성의 활용은 그림책 표현의 중요한 요소가 되어 하나의 표현방식으로 정착되었다. 연구자는 그림책에서 이러한 표현 방식은 줄거리 못지않게 중요하다고 생각 아래 이 연구를 시작하였다.
본 연구의 목적은 줄거리를 섬네일(thumbnail)로 옮기는 과정에서의 그림책 연출을 통해 동일한 줄거리로 서로 다른 그림책을 만들 수 있음을 확인하는 것이다. 본격적인 연구에 들어가기 앞서, 2장에서 매체적 특성에 따른 그림책 표현의 특징을
찾았다. 3장에서는 그림책 연출을 그림책 창작과정에 따라 네 단계로 나누어 설명하였다. 그리고 4장에서는 구조연출과 장면연출로 동일한 줄거리를 다르게 표현한 그림책 사례를 들어 연구를 마무리했다.

연구에서 말하고 있는 ‘줄거리에서 섬네일까지의 그림책 연출의 과정’은 다음과 같다.

구조연출: 줄거리와 매체(책)가 결합하는 과정이다. 줄거리는 그림책 형식에 맞게 가공할 수 있는 유형을 찾고, 매체(책)는 줄거리에 어울리는 책의 구조를 찾는다. 그리고 비슷한 구조로 이루어져 있는 줄거리 단락과 책 구조가 결합한다.

화면연출: 구체적인 장면을 구상하기 전에 줄거리 단락을 한 화면에 몇 개의 장면으로 구성할 것인지를 계획하는 것이다.

장면연출: 줄거리를 그림으로 표현하는 방식에 대한 연출로 의미를 만들어 내는 방식에 따라서 상황 재현적 장면연출과 의미 함축적 장면연출로 나누어 설명하였다.

글과 그림 관계연출: 글과 그림의 중복 여부를 확인하며 조율하는 과정으로 중복여부에 따라서 포함관계와 보완관계로 설명하였다.

위와 같이, 그림책 연출의 역할과 기능을 정리해보았다. 그리고 동일한 줄거리가 연출 방법에 따라서 다르게 표현 될 수 있다는 것을 사례를 통해 확인하였다. 이 연구로 인해 새로운 연출 방법의 가능성을 열어두고 이에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기에 도움이 되었으면 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Writers utilize physical features of picture books in various ways. The utilization of physical features has become one of the most important factors in creating picture books and has established as one way of ‘expression language of picture book’. This study is based on the idea that this way of ‘expression language of picture book’ is as important as synopsis. The main objective of this study is to confirm that two different picture books can be created by planning process with developing thumbnails from the same synopsis. Chapter 2 is about the characteristics of ‘expression language of picture book’ by utilizing physical features of books. Chapter 3 covers the process of planning picture books with 4 phases of picture book creation process and the last, chapter 4 deals with examples of picture books which have same synopsis but which are differentiated from each other through structure planning and page planning. In this study, planning processes with developing thumbnails from synopsis
are as followings;

Structure planning: is a combine process for material (a book) and synopsis. The synopsis seek for the certain type which can be adoptable to format of a picture book as
the material (a book) seek for suitable book structure for the synopsis. Then a paragraph of synopsis combines with the suitable book structure.

Page planning : is a configuration process for the paragraphs of synopsis and, this process is to determine that how many scenes will belong to one full-page before the planning process of specific scene.

Scene planning: can be explained with two types of planning depending on the way of describing pictures from synopsis. The one is ‘situation reproduction-scene planning’ and the other is ‘implication-scene planning’.

Relation between writing and illustration: is a coordination process while checking whether writing and illustration overlap each other. Depending on whether the writing
and illustration overlap, the relation can be explained with ‘inclusive relation’ or ‘complimentary relation’.
Role and function of the ‘picture book planning’ kept in order as above in this study which confirmed that different picture books can be created from the same synopsis by planning process. I hope that this study can help with developing various 'picture book language’.
