      Attendance rate at institutions of higher education in Korea today is about 44% which clearly indicates that higher education becomes a way of life for almost all citizens in this country. However, there is still not enough higher education in stitutes to fulfill the need and aspiration for those who want to go to coleges and universities and achieve degrees. In order to better serve for educational needs of general population, Korean government declared a 'law regarding achievement of a college degree (bachelor) by self-directed learning' in 1990. Since then, about 1,129 adult learners earned bachelors degree by successfully passing 4 levels of examinations and tests.
      In Korea there are several different institutions where one can attend to facilitate his/her self-directed learning and eventully obtain a bachelor degree. Among many, self-directed learning programs offered by social education facilities at universities appear to be the most popular choice. People prefer to attend those programs because of many advantages. For example, taking certain courses from university programs is equivalent to taking official exams so those courses are excluded from exam list one taken as a university required curriculum. Although it has not been long since the law had passed, there is an increasing number of universities that start adult education facilities in the past few years. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine educational needs and the characteristics of adult learners who are registered in self-directed learning programs to obtain bachelors degree in the future. I believe that it is very important to understand this group of learners and their needs in order for universities to provide appopriate and better educational services.
      For the purpose of this study data on students attending School of Adult Education at Duksung Women's University were anzlyzed and examined. A survey research was conducted to collect data and statistical methods such as comparisions of frequencies, chi-square test of independence, and analysis of variance were used for analyzing data.
      The findings revealed that there were three times more females than males among those who registered in the program. Additonally, more than 60 percent of students were in their 20's. The results indicate that young women appear to hava a higher aspiration for higher education.
      A high aspiration for education was one of the most important message found in examining educational needs and characteristics of adults learners in self-directed learning programs. The results showed that regardless of the individual's age or gender, people wanted to continue their pursuit of higher education and obtain bachelor degrees. Furghermore, a lot of students expected to go on a graduate level of study, which is another clear indication of very high level of educational aspiration among adults.
      Despite the high level of educational aspiration and enthusiasm revealed by adult learners, the findings also showed that there were several difficulties that they face in pursuing their educational goals. The most common difficulty was 'lack of study time' because most adult learners work full-time during the day and only be able to study during evenings and nights. The second most common difficulty was 'lack of help' for their self-learning processes. This is a very important finding because the lack of help is believed to be closely linked to the possibility of students' losing confidence or interest in studying.
      In sum, it can be pointed that the main role of school of adult education and university programs is to consider the characterristics and educational needs of adult learners more carefully in order to better serve the needs of ever so increasing number of those who want to pursue a higher degree in education by utilizing self-directred learning programs.
