This study explores the pedagogical potential of generative AI—specifically ChatGPT and Gemini—in liberal arts Korean language courses focusing on writing, speaking, presentation, and debate during the first semester of 2025. The research examines how generative AI can function not only as a tool for information retrieval but also as a facilitator of critical thinking in key educational components such as plagiarism prevention, topic exploration, and debate preparation.
First, in the area of writing ethics, AI-assisted question-and-answer activities encouraged students to actively engage with issues of plagiarism and copyright, fostering a stronger awareness of academic integrity.
Second, in topic exploration and inquiry-based writing, students developed their own philosophical and socially relevant questions and expanded their critical thinking through interaction with AI.
Third, in debate preparation, students structured arguments and organized evidence with the aid of generative AI, which improved their logical reasoning and debate performance. These cases demonstrate that generative AI can act as a partner in learning—supporting students’ thinking, writing, and speaking skills— rather than merely serving as a content provider.
As such, AI-integrated instruction offers a meaningful model for cultivating complex literacy in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In conclusion, the integration of generative AI in liberal arts education not only preserves but enhances the essence of student-centered learning, while simultaneously placing ethical and creative responsibilities on both educators and learners.
