This article aims to analyze Hyun Sin Kyu's life and his scientific achievements. I will demonstrate following five arguments. First, Hyun received a thorough training in forest genetics while he stayed in America during the period between 1951 and 1952. With this background, he started the forest tree breeding in Korea from 1953. Second, his three major achievements are the mass production of Pinus rigiteada, the introduction of Poplar through selection, and hybridization of Populus alba glandulosa. Third, he played a crucial role to establish and run the Institute of Forest Genetics. Fourth, through his role in the Institute of Forest Genetics, the so-called "Hyun Sin Kyu School" was formed. Fifth, Hyun and his school emphasized the practical rather than theoretical side of research since their primary concern was to breed more tree in Korea which suffered the lack of timber during the 20th century.
