This paper will focus on the study of the spirituality of Jesus’ prayer in the Gospel of Mark for the model of our spiritual formation and soul care/discipline. As the exegetical method for this study, I will use a ‘narrative reading,’ which considers the finality, totality and coherence of Mark’s Gospel and also finds its poetic meaning: the meanings of time (‘night’ time) and place (‘wilderness’ place) in relation to the spirituality of Jesus’ prayer. Mark emphasizes that prayer life is the motivational power for overcoming the various temptations and trials, and for accomplishing his mission as the Messiah of power and suffering: “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.” (9:29). From this view, for the study of the spirituality of Jesus’ prayer I will observe the portrait of Jesus’ prayer mainly in Mk 1:35-39 (wilderness, mission and prayer) and Mk 14:32-42 (Gethsemane, mission and prayer) which can be considered as a kind of inclusio in relation to his prayer and mission as the Suffering Son of God: in the wilderness at the beginning of his ministry and also in Gethsemane at the beginning of his passion. I also will deal with the eschatological spirituality of ‘watchfulness’ in Mk 13:33-37 in relation to these two passages.
