August Wilson is an African American playwright in the 1980s following Hansberry, Baraka and Shange. Fences(1987), one of his representative plays, sets in 1957, when the struggle against segregation has come to the climax in the U. S. This paper aims to investigate the conflicts between Troy, the protagonist and the other family members, his sons and his wife. Troy comes into conflict mainly with his second son, Cory. Troy does not want Cory to become a football player. Troy fails to keep up with the changing times and is convinced that Cory will not succeed as a football player. Also Troy has conflict with his wife, Rose due to his infidelity. Troy has worked hard as a garbage collector for 18 years to support his family and has a strong sense of responsibility. Wilson tries to overturn the former stereotype of African Americans, an image of lazy and shiftless, and foolish people. He suggests a positive image of African Americans through Troy. Troy has demerits as well as merits, and at the end of the play the conflicts among the family members are reconciled and Troy is forgiven. Raynell, Troy’s daughter symbolizes a hope for the future generation. In conclusion, the play is considered as a portrait of an African American family in the 1950s.
