This study sought to examine how academic stress among cyber university students affects academic burnout as a result of basic psychological needs and academic procrastination. A survey of 263 students was carried out, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and Process Macro 3.5. Correlation analysis showed that academic stress and academic procrastination were positively correlated with academic burnout, while basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, competence) were negatively correlated with academic burnout. The analysis of the mediating effects revealed that dissatisfaction with autonomy and relatedness indirectly mediated the relationship between academic stress and academic burnout. Meanwhile, dissatisfaction with competence sequentially mediated the link through procrastination. These findings suggest that under high academic stress, boosting autonomy and relatedness and preventing students with reduced competence from indulging in procrastination are crucial. Finally, the limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
