    In recent years, the aftermath of COVID-19 has had a great impact on the global supply chain and the real economy, and many corporations are in the course of contemplating and establishing confrontation strategies in response to the new reality of this business environment.
    Innovation is essential for corporations to secure a competitive advantage in business environment with high uncertainty and rapidly changing technological environment. In addition, various means of cooperation with external Institution are necessary for innovation to be effective and also to gain effective business performance. Internally within the corporations, it requires a lot of effort and investment such as effective organizational structures, capabilities, and institutional support.
    To reduce corporate uncertainty and secure a sustainable competitive advantage in a dynamic environment, corporations need innovation strategy so that they can base on knowledge, which is a key resource, to develop and create new values and innovation outcomes. Absorption capabilities create new values of knowledge to produce innovation outcomes through the processes of acquire, assimilate, transform, and exploit of knowledge acquired through internal and external activities for corporate innovation. In this way, it is possible to maximize the utilization value of knowledge through this absorptive capacity. In addition, appropriability is considered to protect the outcomes created through innovation efforts and also to secure future profit.
    The purpose of this study is to secure the differentiated competitive advantage of corporations to ensure successful innovation, suggest absorptive capacity as a core competency, and examine conditions to maximize the effectiveness of the absorptive capacity. To achieve these goals, this study explored the conditions that can optimize the absorptive capacity effects for corporations to derive effective absorptive capacity strategic mechanism, set up knowledge transfer activities and technological cooperation activities as the key primary factors of absorptive capacity, and investigated the influence caused by the key knowledge and technological resources acquired through the corporations' ceaseless efforts for innovation on the corporate performance creation and improvement through absorptive capacity and appropriability.
    This study analyzed five major manufacturing industries in Korea: the IT industry, the electrical and electronic industry (including the semiconductor industry), the chemical industry (including the pharmaceutical industry), the automobile industry, the food and beverage industry, and other industries. To measure and analyze the absorptive capacity based on the corporate lever, a survey was collected from a person in charge of each corporation to prevent overlapping responses in enterprises.
    The survey targets were limited to the R&D officers and R&D division employees(managers) with the highest understanding of the effectiveness of absorptive capacity and task relevance. and data collected from a total of 330 companies, excluding unfaithful responses, were analyzed. As for the analysis method, the structural equation model was verified about all the targeted industries (STUDY 1) and subjects in each industry (STUDY 2), and PLS and Sobel test were used to examine the effectiveness of the absorptive capacity and appropriability. Next, the serial multiple mediation was verified to examine the effectiveness dependent on the sequential relationship between absorption capacity and appropriability using SPSS Process Macro for the entire industry (STUDY 1).
    The analysis results are as follows. First, the effectiveness of the absorption capacity strategy mechanism varied by industry. From the point of view of the absorptive capacity, the influence appeared in the order of automobile industry > food and beverage industry > chemical industry > electrical and electronic industry > IT industry. From the point of view of the appropriability, it appeared in the order of automobile industry > electrical and electronic industry > food and beverage industry > IT industry, chemical industry. The differences in the effectiveness in each industry depend on the differences in the industrial characteristics and industrial structures, differences in perception degree about knowledge transfer and technological cooperation activities for innovation, absorptive capacity, and appropriability, and the differences in corporate strategies.
    In the additional analysis conducted to examine the differences in the effectiveness by firm size, the absorptive capacity appeared in the order of small firms > middle-standing enterprise > medium-sized enterprise > large enterprise, and the appropriability appeared in the order of large enterprise > middle-standing enterprise > medium-sized enterprise > small firms. It showed that small firms, which lack possession of resources, relatively cause the strongest influence on absorptive capacity, and large enterprise with abundant resources had the lowest relevance with absorptive capacity and were most strongly influenced by appropriability.
    In addition, the results of analyzing the entire industry (STUDY1) showed that the mediating effect (Serial Multiple Mediation) from the sequential influence caused by the absorptive capacity on appropriability has a stronger influence compared to the mediating effect (Parallel Multiple Mediation) caused by the absorptive capacity and appropriability, respectively. This implies that consideration should be provided to secure absorptive capacity together with appropriability to enhance the outcomes of various innovation activities.
    This study investigated the conditions that ensure the strongest effectiveness for the absorptive capacity to seek for strategic understanding and the establishment of effective mechanism about absorptive capacity, and the results of this study are expected to provide guidelines and help corporations establish effective management and technical innovation strategies in planning and implementing R&D for management and promotion of technological innovation.
