프랑스의 역사 연구와 개념사 = Historiography and Conceptual History in France

국문 초록 (Abstract)

프랑스 역사가들은 개념사에 별다른 흥미를 보이지 않았다. 프랑스 역사가들 스스로가 프랑스에는 독일이나 영국과 같은 개념사 연구의 조류가 전혀 존재하지 않는다"고 단언할 정도로 프랑스 역사학은 개념사에 무관심했다. 왜 프랑스 역사가들은 개념사에 관심을 갖지 않았을까? 언뜻 보기에 프랑스 역사학은 개념사가 발전하기 위한 유리한 여건을 가지고 있었다. 사회사, 비사건사 등 독일 개념사의 주요한 이론적 전제들을 공유하고 있었고, 무엇보다 개념사의 이론적 토대 가운데 핵심 축을 구성하고 있는 언어의 역사적 연구에 대한 문제 설정이 프랑스 역사가들 사이에서 충분히 확산되어 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 개념사가 받아들여지지 않았던 이유는 구조주의의 영향 때문이었다. 1950년대와 70년대 프랑스에서는 역사학과 구조주의의 결합이 이루어진다. 그 결과로 생겨난 프랑스 역사학의 실증주의적 특성은 해석학적전통에 기반하는 개념사가 들어설 여지를 완전히 제거해 버렸고, 언어의 역사적 연구에 대한 요구는 실증주의적 담론 분석으로 해소되었다. 그렇지만 1980년대 후반부터 프랑스 역사학은 실증주의적 횐상에서 깨어나기 시작한다. 그리고 정치사상 연구자들을 중심으로 개념의 역사에 대한 관심이 생겨나게 된다. 특히 마르크스주의계열의 학자들 가운데 일부는 자신의 작업에 개념사 연구를 활용하기 시작한다. 물론 이들의 연구는 독일의 개념사와는 다른 문제설정과 다른 지향점을 가지고 있는데, 이는 독일과 프랑스 사이의 상이한 역사적 조건을 고려한다면 아주 당연한 모습일 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For a long time, French historians took little or no interest in conceptual history, openly asserting: “there are not veritably currents of conceptual history in France.” So, why were they indifferent to this new German historiography? France outwardly had good circumstances to ensure its adoption of such a conceptual history: important elements of this historiography, such as social history, histoire non-evenementielle-especially the historical analysis of language-also held interest for French historians. But, they did not introduce a conceptual history, owing to the influence of structuralism. In the 1960s and 70's, French history joined the current of structuralism, an encounter which ensured the positivism of French history. In other words, a positivist history did not leave any room for the introduction of a conceptual history founded on hermeneutics. It was the analysis of discourse that appeared to reply in a positivist way to a requirement of the historical analysis of language. Subsequently, French history would awake from the illusion of positivism, in the 1980's, and it was then that it began to display an interest in conceptual history. Nevertheless, French conceptual history differed from German history, which was a matter of course, if we consider the dissimilar historical conditions of France and Germany.
