The purpose of this study was twofold : (a) To develop regression equations for the estimations of body density and percentage fat from a sample of young female gymnasts, using anthropometric measures; (b) To evaluate the accuracy of anthropometric regression equations of adult female gymnasts and equations of adolescent athletes and children for the estimation of body density and fat percentage.
The subjects were 64 young female competitive gymnasts between the ages of 8 and 17, members of local gymnastics clubs. These gymnasts were classified by maturation level into prepubescent, pubescent, and postpubescent groups, according to the Tanner classification in 1962.
Thigh skinfold had highest correlation with body density for the postpubescent group (r = -0.83; SEE = 0.0039g/m). The regression equation for this group was: BD = 1.08930 - 0.001467 *Thigh SF. When the square of the thigh skinfold was added to the above equation, the multiple correlation increased to 0.886(R square = 0.785) with an SEE of 0.0034 g/ml. This finding supported the concept that the relationship between body density and skinfold fat is curvilinear.
Although the number of the maturity groups were small, the equation of Sinning published in 1978 which was derived from adult female gymnasts showed high correlation between predicted and actual body densities for the postpubescent group (r = 0.81) and prepubescent group (r = 0.65). In addition, the postpubescent group generally showed higher correlation than the pubscent and prepubescent groups. These findings imply that postpubescent group conformed more to adult female gymnasts than the prepubscent and pubescent groups.
