The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of encounter group counseling on peer relations and personality of 5th- and 6th-grade students of the elementary school.
For this purpose, this study formulated hypotheses was as follows:
1-1. For the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, there will be a significant difference in the score of peer relations between the preliminary test and the post test.
1-2. For the control group, to which encounter group counseling is not applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of peer relation between the preliminary test and the post test.
1-3. For the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of peer relation between the post test and the follow-up test.
1-4. For the control group, to which encounter group counseling is not applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of peer relation between the post test and the follow-up test.
1-5. The variation of the score of peer relation between the preliminary test and the post test of the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, will be different from that of the control group.
2-1. For the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, there will be a significant difference in the score of personality between the preliminary test and the post test.
2-2. For the control group, to which encounter group counseling is not applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of personality between the preliminary test and the post test.
2-3. For the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of personality between the post test and the follow-up test.
2-4. For the control group, to which encounter group counseling is not applied, there will not be a significant difference in the score of personality between the post test and the follow-up test.
2-5. The variation of the score of personality between the preliminary test and the post test of the test group, to which encounter group counseling is applied, will be different from that of the control group.
The subjects of this study the test group of 20 5th- and 6th-grade students from C Elementary School, to which encounter group counseling was applied, and the control group of 20 students from S Elementary School. To select subjects, this study used Teacher Observation Item List and Sociability Scale.
The inspection tool employed in this study was an encounter group counseling program, which was adapted from existing programs for 5th- and 6th-grade students in elementary schools. The tool to measure peer relation was Peer Relation Scale that was developed by Hong Sun-oks (1984) and the tool to measure personality was Personality Scale that re-organized the personality scale developed by Jeong Beom-mo (1989).
This study carried out t-test on differences in the scores of the preliminary and posterior tests for the test group and the control group to verify Hypothesis 1-1, 1-2, 2-1 and 2-2, and on differences in the scores of the post and follow-up tests for the test group and the control group to verify Hypothesis 1-3, 1-4, 2-3 and 2-4. In addition, it carried out t-test on variations of scores between the preliminary and posterior tests for the test group and the control group to verify Hypothesis 1-5 and 2-5.
Conclusions derived from the results and discussion of this study are as follows.
First, the encounter group counseling program was effective in improving the peer relation of 5th- and 6th-grade elementary school students, and the effect lasted for over eight weeks. The result is considered to be the reflection of the encounter group counseling program applied in this study. Thus, the program is regarded as efficient in and applicable to the improvement of the peer relation of fifth- and sixth elementary school children. In addition, it is necessary to expand the application of the program to first ~ 4th grade students to verify its effects.
Second, the encounter group counseling program brought personality changes to 5th- and 6th-grade elementary school children, and the effect lasted for over 8 weeks. This suggests that the program caused positive changes in children's personality. Thus the application of the encounter group counseling program is considered educationally meaningful in that it may bring about positive changes in elementary school children's personality.
Third, the variation between the preliminary test and the posterior test for the test group, to which the encounter group counseling program was applied, appeared to be significantly different from that of the control group. This suggests that the encounter group counseling program not only improves children's peer relations and brings about positive changes in their personality, but also influences variations in the test group. Thus the encounter group counseling is considered worth applying to the improvement of peer relations and the development of personality.
