This study is to explore conceptuality of the land in Judges 2 through the relationship among Israel, YHWH, and the judges.Expecially it is based on the annihilation command and coexistence between Israel and the Canaanites because it seems that the Canaanites continued to live with Israel in the land where only Israel is supposed to live. According to Deuteronomy 7, Israel should have annihilated all the people of Canaan or at least should not have made any covenants with them. The reason for this commandment is that the Canaanites might lead Israel to worship their gods, which is a grave and unforgivable sin against YHWH. When Israel failed to do so, YHWH made the Canaanites live with Israel in the land in order to punish Israel. When they cried to YHWH, a judge arose to save them from the enemies. However, they did not listen to the judges (v.17) and did more evils after the judges died. Now Judges 2 said that YHWH was not going to expel those Canaanites on purpose because YHWH wanted to test Israel. Therefore, the concept of the land has not been changed since the time of Exodus in terms of its spatial understanding, but it is obviously changed in terms of its understanding of the qualified residents. The ideal concept of the land allows only Israel to live in the land. The Canaanites is now the legitimate people to live in the land under the permission of YHWH. This is a new way of understanding on the concept of the land, compared to the previous pictures in Exodus and Deuteronomy.
