This paper explores the learners perspective of the small group work by accomplishing an assignment out of the classroom. For this, there are three research questions: ①Are the learners satisfied with their small group work? ②Are there any correlation between the learners satisfaction and their backgrounds such as their
gender, major, and English competence. ③What opinions do the learners have on the details of small group work? One hundred forty students participated in the study. They were given an assignment which was to make their own groups by themselves and accomplish their own goals during one month. After completing their assignments, they
were asked to respond to a questionnaire. The survey was analysed, and the findings are as follows: ①60% of the participants were satisfied with their small group works whereas 10% of the students were not. The two key words time and efficiency were derived from the students reasons for their satisfaction. Dissatisfied students
highlighted negative aspects of time while satisfied learners appreciated efficiency for their group work. ②There were no correlations between satisfaction degree of the small group work and the learners gender and major except for their English competence. However, the correlation of between the degree of satisfaction and the
English competence was very low. ③The students identified their opinions about the details of their small group work. They preferred improving their English ability as the best goal of their work. They responded that 4 students were most proper for forming a group. They also mentioned that close classmates are best for composing a group.
According to the findings of the study, 1 month was the most suitable time period for a group work. In regards to the criteria of their work assessment, the participants preferred the result of the work to the procedure of the work. From the results of the study, it is revealed that the learners have their own independent and autonomous idea
for accomplishing their small group work. Therefore, the results of the study will be useful not only for more efficient small group works but also for other successful learner-centered activities in English classroom
