This research examines the preference structure for economic growth vs. environmental protection among Indonesians. For this purpose, we employed data from the fourth wave of the Asian Barometer Survey. In contrast to the conventional wisdom, we found that Indonesians prefer environmental protection to economic growth. We further identified that religiosity, ethnicity, and rural development are associated with the individual survey respondent’s preference pattern.
