Since the end of the Cold War, new forces-cultural, political, environmental, and economic-have swept the world. Global issues and problems are growing in magnitude. The fact that we live in a globally interconnected world has become a clich'e. Yet there is little consensus on what is globalization and how our lives will be affected by it. In this context, Americans have recently begun to reexamine the role of their country within these new global complexities and questioning the ability of many of their basic institutions to cope with these new realities. It was true that many important issues related to global and international studies were missing or were inadequately dealt with in America. As a result, Americans have agreed that no institution needs to respond more than their nation's schools. From this conception, global and international studies education is drawing attention among people, especially social studies teachers, in America. At the core of all contemporary international and global studies are two concepts, change and interdependence or connectedness. These two concepts provide a baseline for developing global literacy.
Noting the changing trend of American schools in terms of global and international studies, the purpose of this study is to analyze the international understanding education in the new 7th social studies curriculum in the Korean middle and high school. Thus, first, the aim and necessity of international understanding education in line with the social studies curriculum was clarified. Second, on the basis of that, the several parts of global and international studies in the 7th social studies curriculum were analyzed. Third, some suggestions for better education in international understanding were provided. In the conclusion, the present situation of international understanding education in the Korean middle and high school was evaluated critically. And recent articles in Education for International Understanding published by Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding affiliated Korean UNESCO were recommended for the development of global and international studies in Korea. Finally the importance of the two concepts of change and interdependence were reemphasized in Korean education for international understanding.
