A study was conducted with 1,047 tuberculosis patients who registered at the Clinic of Chungnam Branch of Korean National Tuberculosis Association for entire 8 years from January 1st, 1978 to December 31st, 1985. The aim was looking for the characteristic of the tuberculosis patients, the states of diseas, the rate of resistance to the antituberculous drug and the regularity of treatment in accordance with the duration of treatment, sectionalizing the patients into the Complete Cured, the Defaulters who have been discharged from the registration and those who were Under Treatment.
The results were as follows:
1. General characters of the patients
1) Of the total 1,047 pulmonary tuberculosis patients, 68.9% were Male and 31.1% Female, and 20-40 years-old groups revealed 46.3%.
2) For the Educational Background, the rate of Primary School Group was 37.3%, High School Group was 24.7% and Middle School Group was 16.5% in that order.
3) For the Occupational Background, the rate of Inoccupation Group revealed 20.2%, and Student Group was 14.1%, Production Workers & Labourers was 12.1% but Agriculture, Foresty & Fishing Group was 11.4% in a decreasing order, 70.1% of total patient lived in Urban Area but the others lived in the Rural Area.
1) In terms of the states of treatment, 52.9% were belonged to the Complete Cured Group, 39.0% were the Defaulters Group but 8.1% were Under Treatment Group.
2) For the duration of treatment, the rate of more than 2 years group was 51.2%, 1-2 years group was 27.6% but less than 1 year group was 21.2%.
3. The characteristics of long-term chemotherapy patients.
1) The rate of long-term chemotherapy patients were high in the Defaulters Group and Male. The rate revealed increasing basis with the aging after 30 years of age.
2) For the Educational Background, the rate of long-term chemotherapy was higher in a Primary School Education than other group. And for the Occupational Background, those were higher in Agriculture, Foresty & Fishing Group, Clerical & related Workers, and Sales & Service Workers than other groups.
3) Rural Resident Group revealed higher rate of long-term chemotherapy than Citizen Group.
4) By the X-ray classification, the rate of long-term chemotherapy of Moderately Advanced Group and Far Advanced Group and Cavitary Lesion were higher than other group, and for the bacteriologically, the rates of Smear and Culture Positive Group were higher than Negative Group.
5) Among the long-term chemotherapy patients, the rate of antituberculeus drug resistance was higher than other group.
6) The rate of long-term chemotherapy patient was higher among the group who treated initially at the Health Center and at the Drug Store than treated at the Clinic. But for the Retreatment, those were higher in the Clinic of Tuberculosis Association and Drug Store than Clinic & Health Center. Especially the rate was higher in the group who treated unsteadily
