Schema is defined to be a socially or personally sterotyped sequence of actions or thoughts which consists of scripts, plans, goals and themes, and it is thus a composite bundle of scripts, plans, goals, themes, agents, actions, and results. Irony results when independent schemas are opposite to one another with consistency and parallelism, based on an appropriate judgemental criterion. The degree of the opposition determines the effective power of irony and easiness in understanding. In addition, the understanding of irony depends on(1) the objectiveness and detachment on the part of ironists/observers, and(2) the unawareness of reality on the part of ironical victims, which also take effects on the ironical power and easiness in understanding.
For the expository purpose, the verbal irony is divided into two kinds of statements. The utterer provides the ironical situation with the ironical statement 1, and he who utters the ironical statement 2 (1) refers to the ironical situation, (2) interprets and evaluates it, and(3) sends his information(4) with detachments and attitudes(scorns, ridicules and what the like). The utterer can thus present the ironical statement 2, only after he recognizes and refers to be ironical situation ; on the other hand, by providing the ironical statement 1 to create the situation, sometimes fully aware of it or sometimes totally unaware of it, the utterer commits its interpretation/evaluation to the hearer. From this point of view, there is no difference between them in the interpretative processes of the assumed ironical situation satisfying the schema-opposition and other properties, except the above mentioned difference. Thus, the emphasis should be put on the analysis of ironcial situations before verbal ironies, so that irony can be considered within a larger framework. And the analysis of ironical situation can serve to explain the pragmatic uses of irony with generality.
