This paper presents the MPT(maximum power tracking) algorithm for the single phase grid-connected photovoltaic power systems to maximize the photovoltaic array output power point. The Perturb and observe which is widely used algorithm is simple to implement, but this algorithm has the disadvantage of local maximum power point. In order to overcome this drawback, the proposed new MPT algorithm has been implemented using the up and down counters to find the maximum power point for an array of solar cells. The efficiency of maximum power point tracking and the total harmonic distortion of inverter output current showed the very small maximum power fluctuation and the excellent MPT efficiency of 99.96%.
