(超话), Bilibili(B 站), Douban(豆瓣), Xiaohongshu(小红书), Lofter, TapTap 등 6 대 주

With the deep penetration of Internet technologies, online subculture communities
have become a core arena for Chinese youth to express themselves, construct identities,
and engage in social interaction. The production and operation of discourse power within
these online circles not only influence the socialization processes of young individuals but
also profoundly shape the ecology of online culture and the broader structure of social
discourse. Anchored in an integrated analytical framework combining Habermas’s theory
of the public sphere and grounded theory, this study focuses on the production logic of
discourse power in Chinese youth online subcultures. It aims to systematically reveal their
cognitive characteristics, practical strategies, formation paths, and influencing mechanisms,
thereby providing both theoretical and empirical support for enhancing youth digital
literacy and improving online cultural governance.
Adopting a qualitative research design, the study conducted in-depth interviews with
24 young participants across five typical online subcultural circles—gaming, fandom,
animation, knowledge-sharing, and e-sports. In addition, a three-month netnographic
observation was carried out on twelve representative communities across six major
platforms, including Weibo Super Topics, Bilibili, and Douban. The qualitative data were
analyzed using the three-tiered coding process of grounded theory: open coding, axial
coding, and selective coding.
The core findings are as follows.
First, the study constructs a “Symbol–Relationship–Rule” tri-dimensional synergistic
mechanism of discourse power production in youth online circles: symbolic capital serves
as the basis of legitimacy, social relations function as the vehicle of dissemination, and rule
adaptation ensures operational efficiency. The level of synergy among these dimensions
determines the effectiveness of discourse power production.
Second, three typical patterns of discourse practice are identified—active construction,
passive adaptation, and marginal exclusion—whose distribution is significantly influenced
by circle entry thresholds, cultural orientations, and platform attributes.
Third, a cross-circle comparison reveals both the commonalities and divergences in
discourse power production across different types of circles: fandom communities
emphasize emotional symbols and strong rule constraints; gaming circles highlight
functional symbols and equalized exposure; and knowledge-sharing circles stress
professional symbols and high entry barriers. These differences stem from the dual shaping
forces of core circle demands and platform technological logics.
Fourth, the study establishes a dynamic contextual model integrating four analytical
levels—individual, circle, platform, and socio-cultural—demonstrating a complete
operational logic of “internal foundation–external constraints–core mechanisms–dynamic
outcomes.”
Theoretically, this research extends Habermas’s public sphere theory into the digital
context by proposing the concept of the “micro-layered public sphere”, offering a
theoretically adaptive lens for analyzing the operational logic of online subcultural spaces
as emerging public communication arenas. Practically, it provides targeted implications at
four levels—individual, community, platform, and society—by suggesting ways to
enhance youths’ discourse competencies, optimize circle governance ecosystems, foster
fair and inclusive platform environments, and build multi-stakeholder collaborative support
systems.
In sum, this study systematically uncovers the production mechanisms of discourse
power in youth online subcultures in the digital age, deepens the understanding of youth
online cultural practices and the power dynamics of digital society, and provides essential
support for fostering rational youth participation in online discourse and constructing a
healthy, inclusive digital environment for their development.
