In general, tathāgatagarbha is understood as the personality that possesses the natural purity of the mind(svacitta-śuddhi), despite being subject to corruption by accidental passions or defilements(āgantuka-kleśa), within the middle period of Mahāyāna Buddhism. This concept implies that sentient beings inherently possess a pure mind, even though they may be polluted by defilements.
The origin of the idea of purity of self-nature lies in the theory of the development of a pure mind(心性淸淨說) in Indian Buddhism. However, in Zǔshīchan(祖師禪) of Chan Buddhism in China, the meaning of self-nature as the nature of Buddha goes beyond literal interpretation. This is because it is the meaning of liberation, enlightenment, nirvaṇa, and is the consilience of prajnā and Buddha- nature. In this way, India's concept of tathāgatagarbha developed into a deeper meaning in Chan Buddhism and the way of systematization and standardization of it as a Buddha-nature is unique to East Asia. The development and transformation of the idea of Buddha-nature have played a crucial role in the evolution of Chan Buddhism’s history. In particular, this idea is weighed with the cultivation and enlightenment(修證) tradition since Bodhidharma's Chan meditation practice for the reason that the ideological basis of the natural enlightenment is from Buddha-nature.
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning and origin of dajīdayong(大機大用) of Buddha-nature revealed in Dangyeongyohae of Baekpageungseon, who identified himself as the legitimate descendant of the Linjizōng(臨濟宗) lineage of Zǔshīchan(祖師禪) in the late Joseon Dynasty. Even though Buddha-nature means the natural purity[integrality, completion] of human nature to Baekpa, he has built his edifice of cultivation(建化門) by emphasizing the differences in the fundamental ability to realize pure nature.
The research methodology of this paper is to examine the origin, transformation, and transmission of how Baekpa, in his Dangyeongyohae(壇經要解) in the late Joseon Dynasty, accepted and ideologically developed the view of Buddha-nature from the Chan tradition of China through the relevant scriptures.
Accordingly, this research delves into Baekpa's Dangyeongyohae, the subject of this paper, as well as an annotated version of Deogibon Dangyeong(德異本 壇經), This exploration is conducted by examining the Tathāgatagarbha-sūtra(如來藏經) and the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtras(涅槃經), which serve as the origins of Buddha-nature thought in China. Additionally, it involves studying Dalmaeorok(達摩語錄), Jogyedaesabyeoljeon(曹溪大師別傳) and the Platform-sūtra(壇經).
