아베로에스와 내세의 문제 ― 종교와 철학의 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아베로에스가 철학적 저술들에서 내세의 부정을 결론으로 도출하는데 반해 종교적 저술들에서는 내세의 존재를 긍정함으로 인해 생기는 입장의 모호성에 주안점을 두는 이 글은 내세의 문제에 대한 그의 입장이 종교의 진리와 철학의 진리가 서로 모순되지 않고 동시에 타당할 수 있다는 이중진리론으로 평가할 수 있는지 여부와 그의 진위가 무엇인지에 대해 검토한다. 내세에 대한 아베로에스의 논의를 분석해 보면, 인간의 개별적 영혼이 죽음 이후에도 분리되어 존재할 수 있다는 근거가 확보되지 않는다. 그렇다면 그가 내세의 존재를 인정한다는 것은 모든 인간에게 필요한 영혼의 종적 보존 또는 인간의 종적 보존을 의미한다고 해석할 수 있다. 더욱이, 아베로에스에게 내세의 교리는 인류로 하여금 덕스러운 행위를 하도록 하기 위한 것이므로 덕스러운 사회를 만들고 유지하는데 필요한 정치적 기술로서의 종교에 필수불가결한 요소다. 이런 종교관에 비추어 볼 때, 아베로에스가 내세의 존재를 인정한 것을 두고 그를 이중진리론자라고 해석할 수 없을 뿐만 아니라 반종교적이라고도 말할 수 없다는 것이 필자의 해석이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Averroes draws the denial of the afterlife as a demonstrated conclusion in his philosophical works while the existence of the afterlife is a religious doctrine that must be affirmed in the dialectical religious works. I wish to deal with whether or not his position might be considered as a double-truth theory, according to which two contradictory propositions, one taught by religion and one taught by philosophy, could both be true at the same time, and what he really means. Averroes does not allow for any possibility that the existence of personal immortality may be established. This leads me to infer that what he means by his affirmation of the afterlife is the existence of a future life for the human species. Averroes also maintains that religion is a necessary political arts for bringing the community to virtuous action. It is my contention that his affirmation of the afterlife does not involve an acceptance of the double-truth theory or an anti-religious attitude.
