한국 가톨릭의 토착화 현상에 대한 민속학적 접근

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국의 가톨릭 문화가 로마가톨릭과는 크게 다르다는 점에 착안하여, 가톨릭이 한국에 유입된 이래 우리 문화와 결합되어 나타난 여러 현상들을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 민속학적 관련성을 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다.
논문의 내용은 오늘날 도시화, 산업화의 영향으로 우리의 민속이 크게 변화하고 있다는 사실과 ‘토착화’라는 용어에 대한 검토를 통해 시혜적인 입장에서 우리문화를 바라보던 종래의 시각을 확인하는 것으로부터 시작된다. 이어 가톨릭 문화가 우리의 민속과 결합되어 구체적으로 나타난 현상을 세시풍속, 일생의례, 민간신앙, 민속문학, 민속놀이 등으로 대별하여 분석하고 검토하였다.
그 결과 한국의 가톨릭교회가 지금까지 부정적인 것으로 인식하고, 의식적으로 가르쳤음에도 불구하고 한국 가톨릭 신자들은 여전히 수 천년 역사 속에서 전승된 우리 문화 속에 존재한다는 것을 규명하였다. 한국 가톨릭 교회의 가르침에 대해 가톨릭 신자들의 의식성향은 ’표면적인 수용과 이면적 거부’로 요약될 수 있다. 이는 가톨릭의 토착화 정책이나 방안이 민족문화를 존중하는 입장으로 바뀌어야 한다는 것을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Noticing that Korean Catholicism is quite different from Roman Catholicism, this study's aim is to review various situations combined with Korean culture since Catholicism came into Korea and inquiry its folkloric relation. This paper starts with the fact that Korean folk customs are greatly changing under the influence of today's urbanization and industrialization and with confirming the present point of view on Korean culture by examining a term of 'inculturation'. Also, it analyzes and examines concrete situations in Catholic culture combined with the folk customs by classifying into customs, lifelong rituals, folk beliefs, folk literature and folk play.
As a result, it has examined that although the Korean Catholic Church considered it negative and has consciously taught them, the Korean Catholic still exist in Korean culture which is transmitted through its thousands of years history. In sum, the attitude of the Korean Catholicism toward Roman catholic expressions appears as "acceptance on the surface but disapproval inside". This suggests that the Korean Catholic Church should change her attitude and respect the native culture of Korea in her policies and plans of inculturation.
