Korean mountain villages tend to be isolated from other regions due to environmental characteristics, thus they develop slower than other regions. Natural resources and traditional settings are well preserved in such regions but these traditions are being badly damaged by commercialization of the area. Habitat traditions are representations of natural settings, lifestyles and values of the region. Sometimes such traditions affect the surroundings as well. That is why, in order to create a satisfying living environment, we must find values hidden in our traditions and hand them down to the next generation according to the modern society. It may seem pointless to study traditional living spaces when the world is changing so fast. Our traditional living spaces tend to be sustainable with the nature. I believe that this study will positively influence our future living space. Therefore, the objective of this study is to research activities of mountain village residents, to find main causes of space transformation, to understand characteristics of transformed spaces and to plan appropriate future space for the mountain villages.
