This study investigated students' perceptions of their teacher and classmates in relation to reported academic help seeking. 167 students at grade 4, 6, and 2 at the middle school were sampled to assess who, why, and in what situations they asked for help when they had problems in math class. Results indicated that students generally preferred classmates to the teacher as help as and saw the teacher, in comparison to classmates, as more likely to facilitate learning. The students' perceptions of personal relationship with the teacher showed main effect of grade. Fourth and sixth graders perceived a closer personal relationship with their teacher than did second graders at the middle school. There were no other significant main effects or interactions. The students' rated likelihood of asking the teacher questions when other students are the students are, and are not, experiencing difficulty showed a main effect at grade. At the upper grades, students were more likely to report asking for assistance if they thought that other also needed assistance.
