The purpose of this study was to review the psychological characteristics and consequences of female sport paticipation. To carry out the purpose, the Psychological picture of the female participants has been pieced together by gathering data from a number of disparate sources. Psychological research on women gas been examined and inferences drawn. Research examining the application of a number of psychological theories and techniques to the female participation in sport has been reviewed.
In general it is the case that research techniques and tests have been brawn from the field of academic psychology and have applied to sport. Worthwhile as this enterprise has been, it has resulted in a patchwork of information with many manifest gaps in our knowledge.
Psychological variables such as personality, anxiety, attributions and expectance, psychological androgyny, attitude, motivation, aggression, spacial ability were reviewed as gender differce factors of female sport participantion. The findings of reviewing in this study were summarized that little or no significant difference of psychological characteristics between female athletes and non-athletes, between successful female athletes and average or unsuccessful athletes, and types of female sport participation.
In conclusion, the main ples of this study is for the adoption of research questions and paradigms which emanate from the viewpoint of the female sport paticipant herself, and not from the view that looks for a convinient psychological theory theory to apply.
