Coastal saline paddies on reclaimed tidelands may play a sink role of atmospheric CO2 due to their low soil organic carbon (SOC) content. In addition, coastal paddies also contained substantial amount of soil inorganic C (SIC). Therefore, accurate determination of the contents of SOC and SIC is crucial for both estimation of the current C stock and prediction of the future C accrual. Despite that, there are uncertainty of the determination of SOC of coastal saline soils that contain chloride (Cl-) and carbonates, which interfere with the measurement of SOC and thereby SIC. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a feasible method for determination of SOC and SIC of coastal soils. In addition, the concentrations of SOC and SIC are likely to vary with changes in soil salinity due to the interrelationship among desalinization, rice growth, SOC accumulation, and SOC decomposition. Moreover, the sources (lithogenic vs. pedogenic) of SIC may also change with soil salinity since increased SOC may supply more pedogenic carbonate. This study was conducted 1) to suggest feasible methods for the analysis of SOC and SIC of coastal soils (Chapter 1) and 2) to investigate the changes in SOC and SIC and the shift of SIC sources with changes in soil salinity (Chapter 2).
In Chapter 1, the feasible method for the determination of both SOC and SIC of coastal saline soils was proposed through literature review and laboratory experiments using coastal and inland soils. The results suggested that determination of SOC using wet oxidation (Walkley Black method using K2Cr2O7 as an oxidizing agent) after removal of Cl- as AgCl by adding Ag2SO4 is more accurate than that using dry combustion with elemental analyzer after removing SIC with acid treatment due to the potential errors caused by acid treatment. It was also suggested that SIC can be computed by subtracting SOC from soil total C (STC) that can be directly determined by dry combustion.
In Chapter 2, the changes in SOC and SIC as well as the shift of the sources of SIC from lithogenic toward pedogenic carbonates with salinity variations of coastal soils were investigated. The changes in SIC sources were investigated using stable C isotope ratios (δ13C) of SIC based on the difference in the δ13C of lithogenic and pedogenic carbonate sources. The presence of SIC in the coastal soils was confirmed through comparative analyses with SIC-free inland soils. For coastal soils, the total SIC accounted for 4.3–77.3% of the total C. Although total SIC showed no correlation with soil salinity, it was positively correlated (r = 0.97 and P < 0.001) with the total calcium (Ca), highlighting the critical role of Ca in SIC formation. The δ13C of the two pedogenic sources was –25.8±0.6‰ for rice residue and –26.1±1.8‰ for SOC, which differed significantly from those of lithogenic (e.g., seashells) sources (–2.6±1.6‰). The δ13C of total SIC ranged from –26.1‰ to –9.2‰, indicating varying contributions from both lithogenic and pedogenic sources. The contributions of pedogenic SIC to total SIC varied widely from < 30% to 100% and were influenced positively by SOC (r = 0.73, P = 0.002) and negatively by salinity (r = –0.72, P = 0.003). Moreover, desalinization increased SOC levels and microbial respiration, which serve as the primary source and pathway for pedogenic SIC formation. These findings indicate that the proportion of pedogenic SIC to total SIC increases with higher SOC levels, while the contribution of lithogenic SIC decreases through desalinization of the coastal paddy soils after rice cultivation.
This study proposes methods for accurate analysis of SOC and SIC of coastal soils. Considering the vast area of coastal saline rice paddy, accounting for about 20% of national rice paddies, accurate measurement of SOC and SIC are crucial for estimation national soil C accrual in agricultural sectors. This study also demonstrates the crucial contribution of SIC to STC, thereby highlighting the necessity of analysis of SIC in estimation of STC stock of coastal saline soils. Finally, the δ13C of SIC was proven to be a robust indicator of the shift of lithogenic toward pedogenic carbonates with desalinization of coastal soils under rice cultivation. Further studies on the mechanisms of increased SOC with desalinization and the effects of the application gypsum containing Ca on SIC are required for the enhanced soil organic and inorganic C sequestration of coastal saline paddy soils.
