World War II made an important impact on American women’s life. The Government mobilized women in a large number for war efforts and its propaganda justified women’s enlarged social role. Though mass media including magazines constructed the affirmative images of female workers and soldiers, the propaganda did not change contemporary gender ideologies basically. It confirmed the stability of traditional gender ideologies.
Cultural institutions participating in propaganda war reflected patriarchal values differently. For instance, Life and Esquire tried to contain gender threats female workers and soldiers posed in different ways. Due to the relative autonomy of a cultural institution, mass media can’t be simplified as an ideological method to deliver the government's messages vertically. Moreover, the contradictions between two dominant ideologies, nationalism and traditional patriarchal ideas also increased the autonomy of a cultural institution from politics.
