This study aimed to develop and examine the effects of an extracurricular program designed to enhance college students’ affective learning competence by strengthening their growth mindset. Based on Dweck’s growth mindset theory, the LAMP-ON program was developed as a six-session activity program to promote students’ growth mindset, academic self-efficacy, learning attitude, and resilience.
The participants were 35 students enrolled at H University, a small college located in Gyeonggi Province. They were divided into an experimental group (n=17) and a control group (n=18). Prior to the intervention, the homogeneity of affective learning competence between the two groups was verified. To examine the program’s effects, pre- and post-test means were compared, and a 2×2 mixed ANOVA was conducted to analyze the interaction effects between time (pre/post) and group (experimental/control).
The analysis results revealed significant differences between the two groups in growth mindset, academic self-efficacy (preference for task difficulty and confidence), learning attitude (learning emotion and motivation), and resilience. These findings suggest that the developed extracurricular program had a positive impact on students’ affective learning competence.
This study provides empirical evidence that a growth mindset program can positively influence students’ learning attitudes and academic success. Furthermore, it highlights the need for continued institutional support for learners’ affective competencies and suggests the potential for developing growth mindset programs within higher education.
