The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of interaction beween the social support network and the Korean eldery and to provide information of the structure and function of the social support network which influence the life satisfaction in the aged. The sample of this study was selected from the elderly living in Seoul metropolitan area. 262 out of 270 respondents were finally selected as datum sources. The methodological instrument was the questionnaire. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. Most of the elderly had the relationship with all kinds of social support network-family, kin, neighbors and friends. Among the source of the social support network, the family was the primary source of support network. The most common size of the social support network was two persons. The frequency of the contact with the social support network was almost daily, and they were interacting in a near distance. 2. In the structure of social support network, the size had the greatest effect upon the life satisfaction in all the support network except neighbor. In the function of social support network, the emotional support had the greatest effect upon the life satisfaction. Also, the social activity support was significant in the family, the neighbor, the friend support network. 3. The elderly having contact with all kinds of the social support network showed the highest life satisfaction. The eldery having contact with one or two kinds of the social support network showed the lowest life satisfaction. 4. In case of the insufficient function of the family support network, the kin support network played the most important complemental role on the emotional support, the social activity support, and the instrumental support (received). Also, the friend support network played important complemental role on the emotional support, the social activity support, and the instrumental support (provided).
