1920-30년대 한국 만화의 '웃음'과 미학적 특징

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1920-30년대 식민지 시기의 만화는 대중의 욕망을 담기 위해 소재적 측면과 캐릭터 구현에 일정한 움직임을 보여주고 있다. 소재적 측면은- 여타의 식민지 대중문화가 그러하듯이- 콘텐츠가 빈약한 탓에 매체 교합이 나타났는데, 이는 만화에서도 마찬가지였다. 그런데 이 교합을 통해 보면, 무엇이 우습고 어떤 방식이 웃음을 재현할 수 있는가를 잘 보여준다. 활동사진의 슬랩스틱 코미디의 방식, 그리고 움직이는 것과 같은 빠른 속도감, 쫓고 쫓기는 인물의 상황 설정이 만화로 구현되었을 때 독자들로 하여금 웃음을 준다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 고전소설에서는 <춘향전>, <심청전>, <흥부전>과 같은 작품들을 ‘모던화’하는 방향으로 웃음을 구현했다. 이때 ‘모던’으로 재해석한 것을 파악한다면 곧 당대의 웃음 효과라 할 수 있다.
