고립상태의 인간 심리에 대한 시각 이미지 연구 : 윌리엄 골딩의「파리대왕」일러스트레이션을 통하여

This thesis is a record of process of studying human mentality in isolation and a work of illustrating Lord of the Flies by William Golding. 'Isolation' is a subject that I, a researcher, contemplated for long years and it interrelated with the subject of Lord of the Flies which shows a great insight of humanity through situational isolation. Lord of the Flies conveys the concept which the researcher had properly with words and draws up guideline to construct the formative language of isolation. Since 2012, the researcher worked on illustrating dealing with introspection of the humanities by isolation and after the numerous experiments of study on visualizing image, Lord of the Flies by William Golding was chosen for the definite establishment of formative language since 2017.

The definition of 'isolation' is a circumstance of being separated from others and being alone without any assistance. This also can be interpreted as a circumstance that being confined in a certain state which against the free will. Therefore, the researcher defined the concept of 'isolation', considering its not only situational circumstance but also psychological circumstance, as 'a state that someone confined in a circumstance and itself', It indicates the mental status which has no will nor is incapable of recognizing the proper situation. The researcher have studied on expressing isolation through illustration based on the interpretation since 2012. In 2017, Lord of the Flies was chosen as a subject of this thesis since the state of isolation, which the researcher have studied on, was properly expressed in words. This study is to confirm how the researcher observe the emotion in isolation and its purpose is to construct the emotion into formative language.

The human in isolation cannot help itself so that stands still in sadness and with concern. It seems that the identical aspect can be seen from the characters of the book. Even the fragile emotion of loneliness and confusion holds its own beauty and it has to be careful and be gentle to deal with it. Thus, the work depicts its stillness and loneliness instead of desperation. Watercolor and clear masking tape were mainly adopted to indicate the mental status. This study includes the consideration of how further the method of handling ingredients could convey certain emotion to establish the formative language.

In this thesis, formative features in illustration of the book are classified into 4 categories: form of emotion, pattern, color and form. First in 'form of emotion', the emotions in isolation, which are interpreted in the aspect of the researcher's, were tabulated. It was applied to Lord of the Flies to explain its formative way of illustration and a plan of composing image. Secondly in 'pattern', it explains how the quiet and rhythmical movement appears simultaneously. Expressions were symbolized by curtain objects: water, rocks, leaves(tree) and the rest. Methods such as dividing a square with transparent tapes and overlap-techniques: overlapping watercolor were adopted. Thirdly in 'color', simultaneous emotions and uncertainty were interpreted as 'fog' in order that primary colors were hardly used but toned down colors were mainly adopted. The color expresses depression as well as fragility. As the basis, statistics were collected after extracting colors from the 23 pages of illustration, drawing and analysing the graph. Color Image Space, a system developed by I.R.I in order to measure scale of Korean's color sensibility, was applied to explain emotions derived from the color. Lastly in 'form', the way of emotions are expressed by description of body and face was studied in shape. Sustained static condition through minimize the movement of character without any aggressive movement and it shows exhaustion by isolation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 고립상태의 인간 심리에 대한 시각 이미지 표현을 연구한 과정의 기록으로 윌리엄 골딩의 소설 [파리대왕]을 일러스트레이션으로 풀어 본 것이다. ‘고립’은 연구자가 수년 동안 고찰해온 주제로, 상황적 고립을 통해 인간성에 대한 통찰을 표현한 소설 [파리대왕]의 주제의식과 잘 맞닿아 있다. 파리대왕은 연구자가 가지고 있는 생각이 언어로 잘 표현되어 있으며, 고립에 관한 연구자의 조형 언어를 구축함에 있어서도 지침의 역할을 한다. 연구자는 2012년부터 고립에 대한 인문학적 성찰을 그림으로 표현하였는데, 여러 과정의 시각 이미지 연구를 거쳐 오다 조형적 언어의 명확한 확립을 위해 2017년도부터 윌리엄 골딩의 소설 [파리대왕]을 일러스트레이션으로 표현하는 작업을 진행했다.

‘고립’이라는 단어의 통용되는 정의는 타인과 분리되어 멀어진 상태, 도움을 받지 못하여 외톨이로 됨이다. 이것은 자유의지에 반하는 특정 상황에 갇혀있는 상태로도 해석된다. 그래서 연구자는 이 논문에서 ‘고립’이라는 개념을 상황적 상태뿐만 아니라 심리적 상태를 포괄하여 ‘상황과 자기 자신에게 갇혀있는 상태’로 정의하고자 했다. 이는 사건이나 상황 등을 제대로 인지하려는 노력이 없거나 그럴 수 없는 심리상태를 말한다. 이러한 해석을 바탕으로 연구자는 2012년부터 고립에 대해 일러스트레이션으로 표현하는 과정을 거쳤다. 2017년도에는 연구자가 해석한 고립의 상태가 소설 [파리대왕]에서 언어로 잘 드러나 있어 본 논문의 주제로 잡았다. 이것은 고립이라는 상태에서 드러나는 감정을 연구자가 어떠한 태도로 보는지에 대한 확인이며, 그것을 조형적 언어로 구축하기 위함에 그 목적이 있다.

연구자가 보는 고립된 인간의 상태는 어쩌지 못해 가만히 서 있는, 슬퍼하고 고민하는 형태이다. 소설 [파리대왕] 속 인물들의 감정에게서도 동일한 감정을 느낄 수 있었다. 연구자는 외롭고 혼란스러운 그 나약한 감정에도 아름다움은 있으며, 그 심성을 건드릴 때는 조심스럽고 부드러워야한다고 생각한다. 그래서 고립상황의 처절함보다는 고요하고 외로운 심리상태를 부드럽게 표현했다. 이를 위해 사용한 주재료는 수채화와 투명한 마스킹 테이프이다. 조형 언어를 확립함에 있어서 작업에 임하는 연구자의 태도는 특정 감정들을 표현함에 있어 재료를 다루는 방식들이 과연 어느 선까지의 감정을 표현할 수 있을지 의구심이 포함되어 있다.

본 논문에서는 파리대왕 일러스트레이션의 조형 요소를 감정의 형태, 패턴, 색(色), 형(形)으로 분류하였다. 첫 번째로 ‘감정의 형태’에서는, 고립 상황 속에서 드러나는 감정들을 연구자의 관점으로 해석한 것을 표로 정리하였다. 그리고 이를 소설 [파리대왕]에 적용하여 일러스트레이션의 조형적 방향과 이미지 구성 계획에 대해 설명하였다. 두 번째로 ‘패턴’에서는, 율동감이 있으면서도 고요한 움직임이 나타나는 방식에 대해 설명하였다. 표현하려는 감정을 특정 오브제를 통해 상징적으로 표현했는데, ‘물’, ‘돌’, ‘잎(나무)’, ‘그 밖에’로 나누었다. 조형 방식은 투명한 마스킹 테이프를 이용하여 면을 분할하고 수채화로 겹쳐 올리는 중첩 기법이다. 세 번째로 ‘색(色)’에서는, 동시다발적인 감정과 모호함을 ‘안개 낀’ 상태로 해석하여 설명하였다. 이를 위해 원색을 절제하고 톤 다운된 색채를 사용하였다. 이 색채는 우울하고 연약한 감정을 보여주는데, 그 근거를 제시하기 위해 전체 23장의 장면에 대해 색을 추출하여 그래프를 만들고 분석하여 통계를 내었다. 분석을 위한 기준은 I.R.I에서 개발한 한국인 색채 감정 척도를 측정할 수 있는 Color Image Space이다. 이 체계를 통해 색채가 주는 감정을 설명하였다. 네 번째로 ‘형(形)’에서는, 슬픔과 우울함 등의 복합적인 감정에 대한 형상을 설명하였다. 격렬한 행동 없이 인물의 움직임을 최소화하여 정적인 상태를 표현했으며, 이는 고립에 의해 ‘지쳐있는’ 상태를 보여주려 함이다.
