『플라테로와 나』는 히메네스의 대표적인 시집으로 노벨문학상 수상작이라는 사실이 말해주듯이 문학성을 가지고 있으면서도 동시에 동시라는 느낌마저 드는 대중적인 작품이다. 이 시집은 평이한 문체와 내용으로 단순하면서도 자연 속에서 소박한 삶의 의미를 다시 한 번 환기시켜주는 작품이다. 그러나 또한 사회에 적응하지 못하면서 느끼는 반감의 표현이고, 시인 내면의 뿌리 뽑힌 듯 한 고독감, 우울과 번뇌를 표현하고자 했다고 볼 수 있다. 이런 그의 태도는 발전과 진보의 신화에 사로 잡혀 있던 20세기의 근대적 삶의 태도에 반론이고, 생의 활력에 대한 좌절과 슬픔인 것이다.
그는 비도덕적이고 유혹으로 가득 찬 퇴폐적인 도시의 삶에서 흉물스러운 삶이 아니라 해가 뜨고, 비가 오고, 눈이 오는 자연의 변화를 느낄 줄 알고 자연과 하나 되는 삶의 의미를 다시 되찾아 준다. 이는 욕망이 일상화 되어 있는 도시라는 현실의 어두운 그림자에 대해 회의 하고, 반복적이고 당연시 되는 일상적인 삶의 의미와, 그 현실 안에서 정신적인 위안과 소통의 가치를 보여준다. 그런 의미에서 히메네스가『플라테로 와 나』에서 그리고 있는 느림과 여유로움, 자연과의 합일은 현실의 부정이나 도피가 아니라 현실의 대안이다. 이는 타락으로부터 순수로 돌아감이며 부자연스러운 것에서 자연스러운 것으로 돌아가는 것이다.『플라테로 와 나』는 위태롭고 희망이 사라진 고단한 현실의 문제에 대한 해결책을 직접적으로 대안에 대한 탐구이고, 황폐한 현실 앞에서 고통스러워하고 사회적인 갈등의 폭발이라는 절망에 빠진 시대를 치유하기 위한 몸짓인 것이다.『플라테로 와 나』는 우리에게 자연에 대한 사랑과 소통을 통해 어두운 시대, 불안한 시대를 헤쳐 나가는 위로를 얻게 해주고 역동적인 힘을 얻게 해준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Platero y yo is thought of as a children’s book and yet it’s one of the best work of Nobel Prize-winning writer Juan Ramón Jiménez. It shows not only that the work has an extraordinary literary quality but that it has been highly acclaimed for its popularity. The poem evokes the meaning of simple life in nature in plain words. At the same time, however, it conveys the antagonism towards the society where the poet failed to adapt, sense the loneliness of the uprooted, melancholy and agony. This attitude came from the hostility to the modern life which was fascinated by the myth of progress. It also can be interpreted as frustration of life. Jiménez tried to restore the value of living in communion with nature in contrast to degenerate life in the city. To him, the city is a place full of temptation and immorality. The writer expresses his skepticism about the dark side of the city life which represents the excessive desire. In addition, the importance of daily lives, spiritual comfort, and communication is emphasized in the poem. That’s why the contact with nature and serenity in Platero y yo should be considered as an alternative not denial or escape. What he suggests is going back to innocence from degeneration, to naturalness from unnaturalness. Platero y yo is a result of the investigation of alternatives to the hopeless reality on the verge of collapse. It is his attempt to fix and console the broken society. It guides us to find the strength and comfort in nature that are needed when we’re going through the uncertain and dark times.
