We observed patients admitted to Dong Guk University Pohang Hospital from March 1, 1989 to February 28, 1990 and classified them by month, season, department, visited, and by disease according to the International classification of Disease by W.H.O.
The results were as follows ;
1) Male to female ratio of in-patients was 1.2 : 1
2) The Internal Medicine department has the largest number of in-patients followed by Obstetrics & Gynecology, General surgery, Orthopaedic surgery, Pediatrics, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Urology, Dentistry.
3) The number of in-patients for each staff member per year was 813 patients for Orthopaedic surgery, 454 patients for Internal medicine, 440 patients at obstetrics & Gynecology, 338 patients at Pediatrics, 296 patients at neurosurgery, 274 patients at General surgery, 197 patients at Otolaryngology, 154 patients at Ophthalomlogy, 75 patients at Urology, 12 patients at Dentistry.
4) The average duration of hospitalization was 14.12 days, longest at Orthopaedic surgery, 37.1 days, followed by Neurosurgery, 25.4 days, General surgery, 13.4 days, Urology, 12.1 days, Internal medicine, 10.8 days, Dentistry, 9.2 days, Ophthalmology, 7.9 days, Otolaryngology, 5.7 days, Obstetrics & Gynecology, 5.3 days, Pediatrics, 5.3 days.
5) According to classification of in-patients by area, the number of in-patients from Pohang Si was 3,546, Youngil gun 1,845, Youngduk gun 335, Kyoungju Gun, Uljin Gun 229, Kyoungju Si 213, Ullung Gun 33, and Others 231.
6) Following the International Classification of Disease, the number of in-patients suffering from injury and poisoning is largest, followed by diseases of the digestive system, complications of pregnancy, child-birth, and the puerperium, disease of the respiratory system, infectious and parasitic diseases, diseases of the circulatory system, diseases of the nervous system and sense organs, diseases of the genitourinary system, endocrine nutritional metabolic disease and immunity disorders, mental disorders, diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, symptoms signs and ill-defined conditions, diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs, diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, congenital anomalies congenital heart disease and others, certain conditions originating in the perinatal period, neoplasma.
