『맨더빌 여행기』와 동·서양의 재발견 = The Travels of Sir John Mandeville and the Rediscovery of the Orient and the Occident

국문 초록 (Abstract)

『맨더빌 여행기』는 중세 서구사회의 동양에 대한 심상을 형성한 대표적인 여행기이다. 저자의 신원과 원본의 집필 장소가 명확히 밝혀지지 않았지만 번역본을 포함해 300여 필사본이 남아 있을 정도로 당대는 물론 르네상스의 독자를 매료시킨 고전으로서, 다양한 참고자료에서 발췌한 내용을 독창적으로 구성한 것으로 분석된바 있다. 허구 가득한 본 여행기가 주목을 받는 것은 오리엔탈리즘의 반향에 따라 편파적인 상상의 지리를 날조하는 대신, 동양이라는 성찰의 거울을 통해 유럽사회의 신앙·윤리적 타락에 대한 통렬한 반성을 촉구하며 위반이라는 수행을 통해 동양을 문화적 교섭의 대상으로 재발견한 점 때문이다. 책에 묘사된 동방의 물적 풍요와 엄격한 도덕윤리의 유토피아는 성지 예루살렘의 회복을 위한 군사적 연합의 현실적 갈망과 함께 대항해시대의 개막을 유도한다. 실재와 환상을 넘나드는 맨더빌의 글쓰기 전략은 십자군 심상에 추동된 사제 요한의 가공과 그를 향한 탐험을 촉발해 콜럼버스의 신대륙 확인과 희망봉을 경유하는 인도항로의 개척이라는 지리적 유산을 남겼다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Travels of Sir Mandeville has been a representative travel writing which shaped Westerners’ mental images of the Orient during the Middle Ages. Being a literature of an anonymous writer called Mandeville, the book with about 300 manuscripts in dozens of languages had catched the attention of both contemporary and renaissance audiences. Critical reviewers argue that the book was relied to a great extent on miscellaneous references rather than being based on personal experiences. This fictitious volume, however, proves special in that it urged Westerners to think over European society’s moral sins reflected on the mirror society of the Orient and helped to rediscover the East through the enlightening performance of transgression. The masterpiece in addition heralded the Age of Discovery with the imagined description of material bounty of Cathay and Indias and with the invention of the mysterious figure of a Christian Priest-king of John who was expected to assist the West for dispelling the Muslims from the Holy Land. The Travels driven by the geographical curiosity toward terra incognita and what I would call the Crusade mentality played a crucial role in opening the geographical horizon wide in the history of geography.
