This study aimed to examine the relationships among maternal phubbing, children's attachment security, and preschoolers' self-regulation. In particular, the study investigated the effects of maternal phubbing and children's attachment security on preschoolers' self-regulation, as well as the mediating effect of children's attachment security in the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation. Ultimately, this study sought to provide foundational data for promoting children's attachment security and the development of self-regulation, as well as for developing parent education programs and practical support strategies to reduce maternal phubbing.
The specific study issues were as follows.

Study Issue 1. Are there significant differences in maternal phubbing, children's attachment security, and preschoolers' self-regulation according to mothers' general characteristics, including age, educational level, employment status, childcare support, weekday time spent with children, and average daily smartphone use while with their children?

Study Issue 2. Are there significant differences in maternal phubbing, children's attachment security, and preschoolers' self-regulation according to preschoolers' general characteristics (gender and age)?

Study Issue 3. Are there significant relationships among maternal phubbing, children's attachment security, and preschoolers' self-regulation?

Study Issue 4. Do maternal phubbing and children's attachment security significantly affect preschoolers' self-regulation?

4-1. Do maternal phubbing and children's attachment security significantly affect preschoolers' self-evaluation?
4-2. Do maternal phubbing and children's attachment security significantly affect preschoolers' self-determination?
4-3. Do maternal phubbing and children's attachment security significantly affect preschoolers' behavioral inhibition?
4-4. Do maternal phubbing and children's attachment security significantly affect preschoolers' emotionality?

Study Issue 5. Does children's attachment security mediate the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation?

The participants in this study were 356 mothers raising preschool children across Korea. Data were collected using a Google Forms questionnaire, and all 356 completed questionnaires without missing or insufficient responses were included in the final analysis. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 27.0. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted, and Scheffé tests were performed for post hoc analysis. In addition, to verify the mediating effect of children's attachment security in the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation, the mediation analysis procedure proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986) was applied, and Hayes's (2018) PROCESS Macro Model 4 was utilized. Bootstrap resampling with 5,000 iterations was conducted to test the significance of indirect effects.
The major findings of this study were summarized as follows.
First, significant differences were found in maternal phubbing, children's attachment security, and preschoolers' self-regulation according to mothers' general characteristics. Maternal phubbing differed significantly according to mothers' educational level, employment status, weekday time spent with children, and average daily smartphone use while with their children. Children's attachment security differed significantly according to employment status, childcare support, and average daily smartphone use while with their children. Preschoolers' self-regulation also showed significant differences according to employment status, childcare support, and average daily smartphone use while with their children.
Second, significant differences were found in children's attachment security and preschoolers' self-regulation according to preschoolers' general characteristics. Both children's attachment security and preschoolers' self-regulation showed significant differences according to children's gender.
Third, maternal phubbing and its subfactors—nomophobia, deterioration in the mother–child relationship, and problem awareness—were negatively correlated with children's attachment security and preschoolers' self-regulation. In contrast, children's attachment security and its subfactors—quality of communication, mutual trust, and low alienation—were positively correlated with overall self-regulation as well as its subdomains, including self-evaluation, self-determination, behavioral inhibition, and emotionality.
Fourth, regarding the effects of maternal phubbing and children's attachment security on preschoolers' self-regulation, maternal phubbing negatively affected overall self-regulation, whereas the attachment security subfactors of quality of communication, mutual trust, and low alienation positively affected overall self-regulation. Maternal phubbing also negatively affected self-evaluation, while quality of communication, mutual trust, and low alienation positively affected self-evaluation. Regarding self-determination, quality of communication and mutual trust positively affected the outcome. For behavioral inhibition, quality of communication, mutual trust, and low alienation positively affected the outcome. Regarding emotionality, mutual trust and low alienation positively affected the outcome.
Fifth, the mediating effect of children's attachment security in the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation was found to be significant. Specifically, higher levels of maternal phubbing were associated with lower levels of children's attachment security, which subsequently reduced preschoolers' self-regulation. Furthermore, children's attachment security significantly mediated the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation.
The findings of this study are meaningful in that they explain the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation through the mediating role of children's attachment security. In particular, the findings suggest that reducing maternal phubbing and promoting children's attachment security may play important roles in fostering the development of self-regulation among preschoolers. Therefore, these findings may serve as foundational data for the development of parent education and intervention programs aimed at enhancing children's attachment security and preschoolers' self-regulation. Furthermore, future studies should continue to examine children's attachment security within the relationship between maternal phubbing and preschoolers' self-regulation while considering various social and environmental factors that may influence children's development.
