영어 분열문의 동사 일치에 대한 코퍼스 기반 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 What we need is/are more nurseries, All we need is/are more nurseries와 같은 영어 분열문을 다룬다. 영어 wh-분열문(예: What we need is/are more nurseries)과 all-분열문(예: All we need is/are more nurseries)에서 be 동사 뒤 보어 위치에 복수 명사가 나타날 경우 단수 동사 혹은 복수 동사가 올 수 있는 점에 주목하여 어떤 상황에서 단수 동사가 선호되고 어떤 상황에서 복수 동사가 선호되는지 연구한 것이다. 연구 방법으로 약 1억 단어 규모의 British National Corpus(BNC)를 분석하는 것을 택했다. 코퍼스(말뭉치)란 언어 연구를 위해 자연 언어 자료를 전산화된 형태로 구축해 둔 것인데, BNC는 문어 텍스트와 구어 텍스트(자연스럽게 발화된 말을 전사한 것)를 모두 포함하고 있다. BNC의 여덟 개의 텍스트 유형 중 학술적 산문을 제외한 나머지 일곱 개 텍스트 유형에서는 영어 wh-분열문에서 be 동사 뒤 보어 위치에 복수명사가 나타날 경우 단수 동사가 나타나는 비율이 더 높았다. 그러나 학술적 산문에서는 복수 동사가 나타나는 비율이 약간 더 높았다. 학술적 산문이 가장 형식적이라는 점을 고려하면 본 연구 결과는 보다 형식적인 맥락에서는 복수 동사가 선호된다는 Hewings(2005)의 주장을 뒷받침한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study deals with sentences such as ‘What we need is/are more nurseries’ and ‘All we need is/are more nurseries’. In English wh-cleft constructions (e.g., ‘What we need is/are more nurseries’) and all-cleft constructions (e.g., ‘All we need is/are more nurseries’), the main verb ‘be’ can be either singular or plural if the focused element (i.e., the post-‘be’ element) is a plural noun phrase. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a certain verb form is preferred depending on the context. To answer this question, this study used the British National Corpus (BNC), which contains about 100 million words: 90 per cent written and 10 per cent spoken texts, An analysis of the present-tense copulas ('is/are') in the relevant wh-cleft constructions reveals that singular agreement is the predominant choice. However, in academic prose, the plural verb form occurs slightly more frequently than the singular verb form. Considering that academic prose is the most formal register, the result of this study agrees with Hewings’ (2005) claim that plural agreement is preferred in more formal contexts.
