The purpose of this study is to examine a primary discourse marker well used in listening scripts (LS) of middle school English textbooks (MSET). Of the 13 kinds of MSET written by the 7th National English curriculum (7NEC), five most preferred textbooks were analyzed for this research in order to know the following: 1) the frequency distribution of well 2) the combination of sentences or expressions 3) whether well is utilized for the purpose of practical use. This study leads to the following results: well is used, 150 times in all. It tends to appear at the head of a sentence as a primary discourse marker. In addition, it appears as question/answer pairs most, at 97 times (64.67%). In general, it is not aimed at enhancing practical use in LS because most MSET do not meet the proper scale High. In designing LS of MSET, text developers and English educators need to consider this study in using a primary discourse marker well in LS for better listening material.
